Even after federal prosecutors have taken legal action against them, the mayor of a California city continues to support medical marijuana dispensaries.
San Diego's newly elected mayor, Bob Filner, has asked police to ignore city zoning violations and stop prosecution of medical marijuana dispensaries. Enforcement of the ordinance approved by the city council in October 2010 is the main local law officers depend on to fight the mischief surrounding the legal marijuana markets.?It was shutting down several facilities.
The Democrat says he supports medical marijuana and wants to ensure the "utmost safeguards" surrounding dispensaries. He plans to propose a new law to regulate them.
James Lambert, an author and spokesman for MarijuanaHarmsFamilies.com, directs Mayor Filner to federal law.
"Bob Filner is the most radical and the most leftist mayor this city of San Diego has ever had," he submits. "What Mayor Filner needs to understand is it's still illegal in the federal government to smoke pot."
Examiner.com reports that though the zoning law that prohibits dispensary locations within 1,000 feet of schools, libraries, and youth centers can now be broken, Filner has vowed to make sure that such facilities will not be near areas where children gather, nor will they be able to "infringe on the quality of life in any neighborhood."
Lambert points out that the restrictions are there for a reason.
"Now while we have medical marijuana here, which is very easy to get, people need to understand yes -- there should be zoning restrictions as far as proximity to schools, as far as proximity to certain housing areas, etcetera," the author notes.
Federal attorneys have targeted marijuana dispensaries for raking in profits, for selling the drug illegally to minors, for opening shop near schools, and for illegal drug trafficking.
