3 Golden Rules for Dog Fosterers | TheBitBot.Com News, Views ...

Taking care of adolescent or adult dogs can be very demanding for a foster carer. But it can also be gloriously rewarding for both dog and human fosterer. Here are three golden rules from pet food brand, Hills Pets? dog experts.

1.??? Clear Routines
Dogs are pack animals and they thrive best in situations with a clear pecking order. The foster carer is the pack the leader, and the dog her subordinate. Clear routines such as going for walks at the same time each day, feeding at the same time, eating the same food (e.g. sticking with a Hills Pets prescribed diet over supermarket brands), etc. can be very calming for a dog, especially in an unfamiliar environment.

2.??? Consistent Training
The golden rule of pet ownership, full stop; a consistent approach to litter training, treats, affection, punishment and encouragement makes it clear to the dog what is and isn?t acceptable behaviour. This will be a godsend once the dog is up for adoption, as it makes them far easier to control and acclimatise.

3.??? Management of Separation Anxiety/Behavioural Issues
Dogs are often sent to foster carers because they have unique care requirements or behavioural issues that need to be rectified. Separation anxiety is common and usually caused by overdependence on an owner or companion. For a dog fosterer to be effective, such behaviour issues need to be addressed and dealt with appropriately in order for the dog to be rehomed with the right new owner.

FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 10 HIGHLY ANTICIPATED FEATURE FILMS FROM MUMBAI?IN CITY TO CITY PROGRAMME

The rise of independent cinema has shifted the terrain, probing into previously taboo subjects and adopted styles that were earlier unpalatable to the Indian audience,? said Bailey. ?Mumbai?s film industry is going through a significant change and a strong group of new filmmakers has emerged. They?re representing the evolution of their city in an interesting way. Toronto audiences are in for a treat this fall.?

India shooting gold medallist Bindra out of Olympics

Indian Olympic shooting champion Abhinav Bindra crashed out of the London Games on Monday, failing to repeat his feat in Beijing, where he became his country's first individual gold medallist.

Bindra, 29, was in contention to reach the final of the men's 10m air rifle competition at the Royal Artillery Barracks but slipped down the rankings to finish 16th in qualifying. Only the top eight go through to the final.

The Indian, who has slipped to number 20 in the world, fell away towards the end of the session, admitting: "It didn't go well in my last 10 shots."

"It was hard at the end because it was closing in," he added. "There was a lot of noise. It was difficult to keep the momentum going but today I just did not have it in me to keep that going to the last."

"I'm looking forward to going home. I've been away for six weeks," he said. "I'm looking forward to being with my family for a while."

When asked about whether he was eyeing the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, he said: "Perhaps, why not? I don't know."

Farcical scenes in Japan-Korea judo quarter-final

The Olympic judo quarter-final between world champion Masashi Ebinuma and Cho Jun-Ho of South Korea descended into farce on Sunday after Cho was awarded victory, only for his Japanese rival to be declared the winner moments later.

The under-66kg fight remained level after a five-minute contest, plus an extra three minutes of golden score, meaning it went to a judges' decision.

All three judges on the mat awarded the bout to Cho, clad in blue, but the International Judo Federation's Refeering Commission then intervened.

Following frantic discussions on the sidelines, referees director Juan Carlos Barcos, who had been seen consulting federation president Marius Vizer, called the judges over and seemingly told them to change their minds.

The three judges then went back onto the mat and having originally all lifted blue flags denoting a Cho victory, this time thrust up three white ones instead.

Ebinuma was declared the winner and although he lost to eventual gold medallist Lasha Shavdatuashvili of Georgia in the semis, both he and Cho went on to take the two bronze medals.

When the original decision was made it brought protests from the crowd and Ebinuma felt that helped him.

"I thought I was going to lose but there was all this support in the spectator seats and that allowed me to get this medal," he said.

"But I'm feeling a bit bad for (Cho)."

Having matched Ebinuma's medal, the Korean let sleeping dogs lie.

"Initially I thought I had won but when it was reversed I was a little sad," he said.

"But I had my remaining fights to focus on and I hoped (Ebinuma) would get a good result because he beat me. We both won bronze so I'm happy."

Federation general secretary Jean-Luc Rouge told AFP the move was made as it was believed an Ebinuma attack had not been scored.

"The referees weren't told to change their minds, they were merely reminded about an incident (an attack by Ebinuma that could have scored) that should have influenced their decision," he said.

"It had escaped their minds but having reconsidered it they then gave their modified verdicts."

When put to him that the incident had been damaging for the federation, Rouge added: "It's better that the federation is damaged rather than judo."

The crowd, who were upset over the original decision and jeered loudly, became even more vocal following the farcical overturn and Cho was afforded a standing ovation as he left the mat.

Already, during the sudden death golden score period, the referees commission had overturned the award of a winning score for Ebinuma by the judges -- the incident the commission then reminded the judges to consider in their later decision.

For the first time at the Olympics, video replay technology is being used to review contentious scoring but the over-rule of a judges decision following a draw has never been done before.

The federation later put out a statement trying to clarify its ruling.

"The International Judo Federation (IJF) is strongly committed to equity and, as part of our sport judo, to the development of all the tools that in our competitions help the referees to make the right decisions, so that the best fighters win.

"In order to achieve this, a video system was set up and has proved successful.

"The referee and the two judges of the fight, after having received the details from the experts commission, decided to change their decision and give victory to the Japanese.

"The IJF states that this is the final and right decision."

The tender poetry of... the Taliban?

Since the Soviet occupation, Islamist fighters have used poetry to express their passions, doubts, and determination. 'The Poetry of the Taliban' was released in the US this week.

By Scott Baldauf,?Staff writer / July 17, 2012

Taliban poetry. The very idea may make some people snort. How can a group of mountain fighters who spent weeks shelling the face off stone Buddha statues and ordered millions of Afghan women to cover their faces under burqas, have anything of value to say about beauty?

You?d be surprised.

Following a release in Britain a few months ago, "The Poetry of the Taliban"?has been released this week in the United States, published by Columbia University Press.

I will let the literary set decide what is good poetry or bad poetry, although the estimable New-Delhi-based British historian William Dalrymple did have this to say:

?This extraordinary collection is remarkable as a literary project ? uncovering a seam of war poetry few will know ever existed, and presenting to us for the first time the black turbaned Wilfred Owens of Wardak. But it is also an important political project: humanizing and giving voice to the aspirations, aesthetics, emotions, and dreams of the fighters of a much-caricatured and still little-understood resistance movement that is about to defeat yet another foreign occupation.?

For those who have spent any length of time at all in Afghanistan, it will come as no surprise that Afghans are a poetic people.

As a young war correspondent in Jalalabad, one of my keenest memories was not a night of bullets flying and prayers spoken, but rather a night of poetry. We had just eaten a meal of rice and lamb, and my host and his cousins and friends were passing around a watering can to wash their hands.

And then it began: One gentleman among us recited a love poem of startling romantic sincerity. Then came another poem about the feebleness of human character. Then another about a fickle lover. Then another about the terrors of battle, and the loss of a loved one. Some of these poems were ancient, but most had been written by the men who were reciting them, all doctors and merchants and political science students. And there wasn?t a cheap and dirty limerick in the lot.

My hosts turned to me, and I had nothing to offer, except appreciation for the beauty of their words.

Today, the release of this Taliban poetry book is an odd echo of that evening session. Odd, because I had probably assumed that poetry only occurred among the semi-elite, and especially those of the enlightened democratic sort who would have been fighting against the Taliban. But poetry is a potent weapon that only gets stronger in the hands of someone faced with an impossible cause and a powerful enemy.

One doesn?t have to agree with the Taliban worldview to appreciate the haunting power of this poem, written in 2007 by Taliban poet Shahzeb Faqir:

?The village seems strange, this is separation

Major power failure in north India, Delhi Metro services hit

-The Times of India

There has been a major power failure in north India since late Sunday night affecting at least six states.

The states affected include Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, UP, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.

"Yes there are problems with Northern Grid, we are trying to restore it", said SK Soonee, CEO of Power System Operating Co (PSOC).

PSOC manages the Northern Power Grid. Officials sources said while the exact reasons for the grid failure are being ascertained , over drawl of power by states could have led to the problem.

The restoration of the grid may take a few more hours even as the engineers are trying to restore it since early morning.

Power supply in some pockets is being restored and the first priority is for public services like hospitals and transport.

"We are hoping to restore the grid in the next one or two hours. We are giving essential loads for services like Railways, Metro and Hospitals," chairman and managing director of Power Grid Corporation AM Nayak said.

Meanwhile, thousands of office-going commuters in the national capital are facing severe hardship as Delhi Metro services have been largely disrupted owing to the Northern Grid failure.

Train services on all six corridors have been affected since morning and the Metro was able to run trains only from 7 am, an hour later than the usual time of 6 am.

Not just Metro serveices, several trains plying to and from Delhi have been stranded due to power failure.

No announcement has so far been made on the resumption of services.

Hundreds of passengers have been stranded at the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station in the national capital as no trains travelling via Agra-Mathura are reaching Delhi.

The whole of Rajasthan, which is one of the states affected due to power supply failure from the Northern Grid, witnessed a complete black out for almost 4 hours between 1 am to 5 am.

The Northern grid failure has hit rail services in Punjab and Haryana also.

All major trains like Shatabadi Express, Chandigarh-Chennai train, Sadbhawna Express, Sachkhand Express, Rajdhani Express are among those hit by the grid failure.

After closing down the thermal power plants following the grid failure, Haryana has started lighting the plants in Panipat and Hisar.

There is total chaos at the major railway stations in the two states.

Ambala railway division has rushed a diesel engine to Chandigarh for running the Kalka-Chandigarh-New Delhi Shatabadi Express train.

The Jan Shatabadi has been halted at Una.

Sentencing in infamous newborn-snatching case

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

This May 24, 2010, file photo provided by the Wake County (N.C.) Bureau of Identification shows Ann Pettway, who snatched a newborn baby from a New York hospital more than two decades ago.

By NBCNewYork.com

A woman who snatched a newborn baby from a New York City hospital more than two decades ago and raised her as her own was being sentenced on Monday.

Ann Pettway will learn her fate from a Manhattan federal court judge.

Pettway, 51, pleaded guilty to a kidnapping charge in February.

For more, visit NBCNewYork.com

During her court appearance then, she offered details of the 1987 kidnapping. She said she took a train from her Connecticut home to Harlem Hospital, where she scooped up 3-week-old Carlina White, who had been brought to the emergency room by her parents.

As part of Pettway's plea bargain, prosecutors recommended between 10 and 12? years in prison. The judge was to decide at the sentencing scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Carlina's birth mother, Joy White, wept during Pettway's plea in February. "I've lost 23 years of being with my daughter," she said, adding that those decades were filled with pain and heartache.

During the proceeding, Pettway told the court: "I went to the hospital. I took a child. It was wrong."

But she offered no explanation for her action.

White said she encountered Pettway at the hospital on the day her daughter disappeared, dressed like a nurse. "She came up to me and said to me, 'Don't cry. Your daughter is going to be OK.'"

The case was solved by Carlina herself.

Woman pleads guilty in 1987 newborn kidnapping case

As she grew up in Connecticut under another name, the girl became increasingly suspicious of her own identity. Pettway told her she had been given away by a drug addict.

Carlina White said she browsed the website of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for clues to her identity. After matching a photo of herself with one on the site, she tracked down her true mother and they reunited in January of 2011. A DNA test confirmed they were mother and child.

Today, they speak every day, Joy White said.

"I love my daughter. She's a beautiful girl," she said, adding that she had kept a picture of her missing baby at her bedside for 23 years. ? ??
