Houston Scientists Probe Obesity-Cancer ConnectionYour Health ...

From KUHF News?..

Researchers in Houston are examining the connection between obesity and cancer. A newly published study involving fat and thin mice has important lessons about how body fat can fuel the growth of a tumor.

Doctors have known for a long time that being obese puts you at greater risk for developing certain types of cancer, such as breast and colorectal.

And, they?ve also observed that once obese people get cancer, sometimes it progresses faster and is harder to treat.

But the question is why? Is it what obese people are eating? Or something in the fat tissue itself?

Mikhail Kolonin is an associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. His latest study started out with two groups of mice, one fat, one thin.

But then Kolonin fed them the exact same diet while monitoring the tumors inside their bodies.

?What we found was when you take genetically identical mice that are either lean or obese and you put experimental tumors into them, tumors will grow faster in mice that are obese as compared to mice that are lean, even though they are on the same diet.?

Kolonin says this shows something in body fat itself is making a tumor grow faster.

Scientists know that fat tissue releases different hormones and growth molecules and they?ve suspected these could help feed a tumor, but Kolonin discovered something else.

He found that actual stem cells from the fat were migrating through the blood, lodging in the tumor, and helping it grow and build blood vessels.

?The tumor is getting fat.?

It?s almost as if the tumor is recruiting these fat cells, or hijacking them for its own purposes.

For Romney and Obama, one-liners are on the menu

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The presidential campaign, which has been a spectacle of finger-pointing and recrimination, is oh so briefly taking a sharp detour so President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney can play politics for laughs.

The rivals are quieting the hostilities Thursday evening to address the venerable Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a white-tie gala at New York City's Waldorf Astoria Hotel that has been a required stop for politicians since the end of World War II.

In keeping with tradition, both candidates have prepared lighthearted fare for the fundraising event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children. That was the case almost precisely four years ago when Obama and Republican presidential contender John McCain poked fun at themselves and each other just a day after an intense presidential debate at Hofstra University on Long Island.

As in 2008, this year's dinner comes in the wake of a fiery and confrontational presidential debate ? again at Hofstra ? lending an air of drama to the pivot from acrimony to humor.

What's more, the dinner's host is Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, the spiritual leader of the Archdiocese of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which has clashed with the Obama administration over contraception provisions in the new health care law. Dolan has said he received "stacks of mail" protesting the dinner invitation to Obama. But Dolan has sought to avoid playing political favorites, even delivering benedictions at both the Republican and Democratic national conventions this summer.

The dinner is Romney's only public event Thursday. Obama was campaigning in New Hampshire, one of a handful of closely fought states in the election, before limbering up for his dinner speech with an appearance on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show."

Romney and Obama were traveling to New York, a state firmly on the Obama side of the political ledger, two days after their Hofstra debate and one day after they and their running mates fanned out to battleground states to mount an aggressive appeal for undecided female voters.

Obama campaigned in Iowa and Ohio on Wednesday, wearing a pink wristband to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and mocking Romney's remark during Tuesday night's debate that as Massachusetts governor he received "whole binders full of women" as he sought to diversify his administration. "We don't have to collect a bunch of binders to find qualified, talented women," Obama said.

At Ohio University, Obama beseeched a crowd of about 14,000 students to vote early. "You've got to go back to your dorm, grab that guy who's sitting there eating chips, watching 'SportsCenter,'" he said. "Tell him he's got to vote, too. "

Romney made his own pitch to women, a play for votes that comes as he moderates some of the conservative stands he took while seeking the Republican nomination.

"This president has failed American's women," he told a crowd in Chesapeake, Va. "They've suffered in terms of getting jobs," he added, saying that 3.6 million more of them are in poverty now than when Obama took office.

His campaign also launched a television commercial that seemed designed to soften his opposition to abortion while urging women to keep pocketbook issues uppermost in their minds when they cast their ballots.

Obama's appearance on "The Daily Show" will be his second since becoming president and his sixth overall with host Jon Stewart.

The Al Smith dinner is named for the former four-term governor of New York who was the unsuccessful 1928 Democratic presidential candidate and the first Catholic to run for president. His great-grandson, Alfred W. Smith IV, is the dinner's master of ceremonies. "I obviously didn't know your great-grandfather," Obama deadpanned as he addressed Smith in 2008, "but from everything that Sen. McCain has told me, the two of them had a great time before Prohibition." McCain, then 72 and 25 years older than Obama, cracked up.

The dinner is such a part of the national political fabric that it was featured in a 2005 episode of the television drama "The West Wing."

While the Catholic Church has differences with Obama on abortion, contraception and same-sex marriage, the Conference of Catholic Bishops has also clashed with Republicans, opposing GOP budget plans that cut programs for the poor and criticizing efforts to deny illegal immigrants tax refunds from the $1,000-per-child tax credit.

Should Your Non-Profit Start a Social Enterprise? | Our Revolution

Maintaining the funding for a non-profit is tough. Sure, there are donations and volunteers, but even then you still need money to keep the lights on and pay for your office space. Most non-profits end up spending as much time applying to grants and trying to keep their financial heads above water as they do actually trying to accomplish their mission.

Some non-profits, like Goodwill, have created non-profit social enterprises where the money they gain from the donated goods they sell is used to keep the organization running. What most people don?t know is that there is a second kind of social enterprise that a number of non-profits have been testing: starting a for-profit business that helps to accomplish the mission of the non-profit while supporting it financially.

For-Profit Social Enterprises Created by Non-Profits

How does it work? It?s different for each organization. For example, the non-profit Aspen Pointe operates for-profit coffee houses that employ veterans, seniors, at-risk youth, and the disabled, and Work Options for Women operates a restaurant in town that trains and employs poor women while donating their proceeds back to the non-profit.

For charitable organizations in need of funding, it can be a great boon to the bottom line. Moreover, as evidenced by the above companies, it can serve as a concrete way to help the very people listed in your mission by offering jobs and training and paying for those things at the same time.

Last but not least, regular people often like supporting businesses like this because they can feel good about their money going to help people who need it.

What Your Non-Profit Needs to Know Before Starting a For-Profit

So, is starting a for-profit social enterprise right for your non-profit? There are several questions to ask before diving into it.

First off, if you?re going to start a for-profit business, it needs to make money, so it?s important to feel confident that you have people in place with the necessary skills and experience to succeed in the marketplace. Beyond this, the culture of your charitable organization needs to fit with the idea of starting an enterprise ? there?s a big difference between people who want to help needy kids hands-on and those willing to operate a business that supports that mission.

Other logistical questions that need to be answered include whether or not you have the money required for startup and operating costs, and if the end result of starting this business will be worth the funds that it takes away from your non-profit. And you?ll definitely want to talk to lawyers and financial advisors about how to deal with unrelated business income.

But the most important question isn?t logistical at all: is starting this for-profit social enterprise really going to help with the mission you set out to accomplish? The answer is going to be different for every non-profit, and only you can answer this question.

University Town Center could change retail landscape

Published: Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 10:28 p.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 10:28 p.m.

Amid the worst recession in decades, key future tenants ? among them, luxury retailers Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom ? bailed from the $315 million project, even as online shopping dug deeper than ever into traditional brick-and-mortar sales.

But now, a partnership between Taubman Centers Inc. and Manatee County's Benderson Development Co. plans to break ground Monday on a 276-acre parcel that will likely become the most upscale retail center between Tampa and Naples. In doing so, the mall's co-developers won't just resurrect a project left for dead ? the largest among dozens scuttled by the Great Recession. It will likely transform Southwest Florida shopping.

?High-end malls like this are very unique, especially now,? said Frank Falciani, senior vice president of Pittsburgh-based dck worldwide, which has built similar projects for Taubman and others and will work on University Town Center. ?There is not going to be anything quite like University Town Center in the southwest part of the state.?

The mall's size ? 880,000 square feet, with more than 100 merchants ? is expected to be matched by a level of extravagance this region has never seen. In many ways the project will mimic what Michigan-based Taubman has done in Tampa with its International Plaza, anchored by Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, and at Orlando's Mall at Millenia, a Taubman property with another Neiman Marcus and a Bloomingdale's among its key merchants.

Anchored by department stores Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's and Dillard's, this area's first new mall in nearly four decades also signals renewed confidence in a regional economy that has struggled mightily since the first Mall at University Town Center plan was shelved.

Additionally, the project's construction at University Parkway and Interstate 75 is expected to spark an eventual paradigm shift, drawing residents and tourists away from traditional shopping hubs downtown, at St. Armands Circle and at the pair of malls that have dominated retailing here for decades.

But that shift will not likely occur until months, or even years, after the new mall's scheduled opening sometime in late 2014.

?Trying to change a longstanding shopping pattern isn't going to be easy,? said Jeff Green, a Phoenix-based retail consultant who has done extensive work in Southwest Florida. ?I believe there is a psychological barrier between those who live on the coast and all that retail so far east.

?The drive feels a lot longer than it probably is, but when it comes to shopping, perception is reality.?

A select group

University Town Center will become only the second mall nationwide in any phase of construction this year, following the March opening of City Creek Center in Salt Lake City.

Though developers are expanding some properties in New York and elsewhere, and new malls plans are getting underway in places like Hawaii, traditional mall building has been scarce. Before the Utah property's opening, a new enclosed mall ? save for discount outlet centers ? hasn't been built since 2006, according to data collected by the Directory of Malls, which has been tracking properties since the 1970s.

?It is a good sign for the economy that malls are moving forward. They employ a lot of people,? Green said, adding that Taubman's decision to proceed with University Town Center is extraordinary, too, because of its location. ?It is strange that it is happening in Florida, as opposed to markets that haven't been hit by the recession as hard.?

Neither Taubman nor Benderson officials would comment on the project ahead of the planned Monday groundbreaking.

When completed, the University Town Center mall will be only 12 miles from the nearest existing enclosed center, Westfield Corp.'s Southgate Mall.

But it will likely shift the epicenter of shopping in Sarasota and beyond away from existing nodes to one that has only recently been developed, near Interstate 75 and the master-planned community of Lakewood Ranch.

There, Benderson has aggressively built or expanded several strip centers and a former outlet mall, adding merchants like Marshall's, The Fresh Market, Kohl's, Sports Authority and others to a roster that had included a Home Depot and BJ's Wholesale Club.

In advance of the mall that is now getting under way, Benderson also lured a SuperTarget, category killers like Best Buy and Total Wine, and a host of smaller specialty tenants, restaurants and service firms.

Taken together, the new stores are intended to capture retail traffic that had traditionally limited shopping to Tamiami Trail in either Bradenton or Sarasota.

?The mall is just the icing on the cake for that intersection,? said Dale Scott, Florida director of the International Council of Shopping Centers, a trade group, and senior executive vice president of Deerfield Beach-based Sikon Construction. ?People will be willing to drive there for that kind of retail selection.?

Some shoppers will have to drive farther than others because the mall is expected to siphon shoppers from as far as Longboat Key and Casey Key, another exclusive residential enclave that lacks upscale stores.

But it is the growing, affluent suburban developments in Lakewood Ranch, and others nearby in Manatee and Sarasota, that are the primary targets for University Town Center.

Falciani, the dck worldwide executive, noted that Taubman ? as well as sophisticated merchants like Saks ? has done extensive market research and demographic studies to map out who will shop at the new mall and how far people will be willing to travel.

?Taubman is very selective about where they are going to build, and I think the recession has only made them more selective,? Falciani said.

Other analysts question not whether the mall will draw shoppers, but how frequently.

?The appeal is there for the residents who live in that area, but the affluence comes from those who live west in the city,? Green said, pointing to wealthy neighborhoods west of Tamiami Trail in Sarasota.

?By developing so much in one area, they're banking on the risk that customers will be willing to pass by other retail concentration to find better shopping,? Green said. ?They will do it, but the question is how often??

There appears to be little debate that the new mall will compete with existing properties and concentrations of stores throughout Southwest Florida.

?The new mall is going to cannibalize the existing malls in the beginning, that's for sure,? said Scott, the International Council of Shopping Centers director. ?They may struggle to find their niche, but there is enough to go around in the south Sarasota and downtown Sarasota market.?

University Town Center also may influence the types of merchants that come to populate existing retail nodes. In place of apparel-themed fashion stores, Green and others contend that nontraditional retailers will fill in a void that the newest mall creates.

To a degree, that transformation toward more mixed-use centers is already happening. In August, for example, Costco Wholesale Corp. opened a members' discount club in Westfield's Sarasota Square Mall on South Tamiami Trail ? space that had been a Dillard's department store.

?Value is king in today's market,? said Howard Davidowitz, chairman of Davidowitz & Associates Inc., a New York-based retail consultancy and investment banking firm. ?It's what shoppers want, so companies are investing in that.?

Although Westfield has flirted for years with the concept of renovating and expanding its Southgate Mall ? a former strip center at South Tamiami Trail and Siesta Drive in Sarasota ? it has never gone forward.

Ironically, the loss of its Saks anchor in two years may provide the impetus for Westfield to finally invest in Southgate, with new tenants, a new footprint, and even new concepts.

That, experts note, combined with its proximity to downtown, upscale neighborhoods and tourist hotels, is expected to keep Southgate a viable retail property, even with the new competition.

Notably, Westfield has yet to name a replacement for Saks at Southgate, and Macy's has been mum on whether it plans to stay in the 425,000-square-foot mall or exit along with Saks.

Starts and stops

The Mall at University Town Center was conceived during the mid-2000s housing bubble, a time of fervent discretionary spending before the stock market collapse and the recession.

At the time, the glitzy mall was believed to be the answer to a market largely underserved by tony retailers, despite wealthy demographics that matched Naples and even parts of Miami.

To the surprise of some, the project landed Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom ? even though both were tenants in Taubman's International Plaza. Saks was not invited to be one of the anchors.

Taubman came into the project through The Forbes Co., another upscale Michigan mall developer. But by 2008, Forbes had dropped out, citing the recession.

Benderson renewed its focus on strip centers, like the Target-anchored one it owns at Fruitville Road and Bahia Vista Street, and on acquisitions. Taubman, meanwhile, bided its time and concentrated on its existing portfolio.

For the next three years, the land where the Mall at University Town Center will be built sat fallow, as housing values plummeted and unemployment soared in Southwest Florida and nationally.

It was not the only retail-themed project to stay in the design phase.

Plans for Sarasota Bayside, a $1 billion mix of condominiums, stores, restaurants, offices and hotel rooms at the former Sarasota Quay eroded. Pineapple Square, a collection of shops and condos slated to transform downtown Sarasota, stalled ? though it has since made incremental progress with tenants including Brooks Brothers and Sur la Table. Other mixed-use projects heavy on retail, including a Benderson-owned site at Stickney Point Road, also faltered.

During the same period, online shopping grew in popularity, both among convenience-seeking customers and retailers fearful of making expensive inventory and lease commitments for new, physical stores.

?What stalled this mall for so long wasn't necessarily just the economy,? Green said. ?It was the retailers. No one wanted to commit to building new stores ? it was too early to build a mall. It might still be.?

By mid-2011 Benderson began making noises that the mall was not dead. Sarasota County commissioners once again blessed the concept, even without a prior commitment to building affordable housing nearby. The developer said while it would likely partner with another firm, Taubman was not yet on board again.

In late April, just weeks after Benderson patriarch and founder Nathan Benderson died at 94, Taubman announced its renewed involvement, and the trio of anchor department stores that would kick it off.

?We feel we have partnered with the premier mall developer in the country, with an ability to attract a great mix of fashion retailers,? Mark Chait, Benderson's executive director of leasing for the Southeast, said at the time.

?This is a market that is ripe for these types of tenants,? Chait said. ?This market is underetailed, and has been in need of this type of project for quite some time.?

Manageable risk

Though the mall may serve to fill a retail void, and experts say it is a tangible sign of the ongoing economic recovery, the development is not without risk.

?No one is building malls right now for a reason,? Davidowitz said. ?Stores are getting smaller and people are buying more online. I don't think retail will ever be the same.?

Between now and 2020, only 28 enclosed mall projects are scheduled to open in the U.S., according to the Directory of Malls.

But some analysts contend that Southwest Florida's unique demographics ? hundreds of thousands of tourists and more wealthy retirees per capita than in most regions of similar size ? make University Town Center different. They note that mall's freshness, combined with a gradual movement away from overbuilt strip and lifestyle centers, could benefit University Town Center.

?The mall is coming at a good time. By the time it is completed, it should be just fine,? said Rick McAllister, president and chief executive of the Florida Retail Federation trade group.

?The economy is slowly improving. Retailers are reporting a slow increase in sales every year,? McAllister said. ?Sarasota is an upscale area and I think the region can afford to support it. Moreover, new always wins. We as consumers like new and shiny things.?

But others note that Benderson and Taubman have failed to draw the exclusive retailers promised back in the early stages of the project. That could be mitigated if the pair is able to convince Nordstrom or a similar merchant to commit to being the mall's fourth ? and likely final ? anchor department store.

Nordstrom, which opened three new department stores last year, has been largely silent on the question. In July 2011, a company spokesman said only that there was a ?possibility? that the Seattle-based retailer would revisit opening an anchor in the mall. The company has been largely focused on developing its Nordstrom Rack concept, an outlet division.

This year, the chain planned to open 15 Rack stores but just a single full-line department store.

?Nordstrom is the next logical choice,? Green said. ?But I don't think they'll come until the mall is open and has matured some.?

Seattle Sports Nut :: Canucks: Defensemen sidelined indefinitely

Canucks Assistant GM Laurence Gilman had news to share over the weekend, and it wasn?t the news fans were hoping for.

No, a new collective bargaining agreement is not in place, but two of the Canucks? top defensemen may be sidelined when it is lifted.

Alex Edler is dealing with a bulging disc injury, while newly signed Jason Garrison is nursing a groin injury. Both players suffered the injuries before the former CBA expired on September 15, which allows the hockey club to monitor their situations.

It also allows the two rearguards to continue to receive contract payouts until they receive medical clearance. Edler, entering the final year of his deal, will be paid $3.25 million this season. His agent and the team were in discussions for a new extension but failed to come to an agreement before the lockout was put in place.

Garrison already received $3 million as a signing bonus. He is contracted for a total of $5.5 million this year, with a cap hit of $4.6 million.

Canucks center Ryan Kesler will also earn a salary of $5 million this season by virtue of his offseason shoulder surgery. He is receiving treatment from the Canucks training staff.

Alex Edler had surgery during 2010-11 to repair a bulging disc and missed more than two months of the season. He finished the 2010-11 campaign with eight goals and 25 assists with 33 points, still a far cry from his sophomore season of 2007-08, when he put up 20 points in 75 games.

Gilman says that neither player will require additional surgery.

The Canucks have been holding informal Captain?s skates at the University of British Columbia in the wake of the lockout. The CBA expired September 15 and neither side has made much progress on a new deal, resulting in a cancellation of the first two weeks of the season. The NHL and the Players? Association are expected to reconvene on Tuesday to continue negotiations.

Vancouver is currently scheduled to open the new campaign on the road against the Dallas Stars on Thursday, October 25th.

Make your Resume Stand Out | Minnesota School of Business Blog

Written?by Megan Bott, Administrative Assistant

Dull. Ordinary. Humdrum. These are not words you want to describe you. Ever. Your cover letter and resume should be no different.

Think about it. A cover letter and resume are the first items representing you to a prospective employer. You don?t want something you spent time on to be recycled two seconds after reaching an employer?s hands. Instead, you want to grab their attention and captivate them immediately.

In a nut shell, you want to stand out from the crowd.

To do this, you may have to explore outside of your comfort zone. To help get your creative juices flowing, I have found some bold and intriguing ideas that may prompt inspiration for you on how to impress an employer.

First of all, who says your resume needs to be on paper? If you want to show a potential new boss that you are hard-working, what would be a better way than to put your skills and accomplishments on fabric or a coffee cup (see photos)? Not only are you innovative, but it also shows that you are a perfectionist (because you certainly wouldn?t want to go through all of that work and then have grammatical or spelling errors).

Another interesting idea to consider is including graphic art, even if it means putting your text askew (see photo). While you certainly don?t want your paperwork to be as cluttered as a hoarder?s closet, visuals are generally appealing to most people.

Another idea to impress others when you?re searching for employment is to take advantage of the technical world. Gone are the days when it was considered inventive to drop off your cover letter and resume in person. Instead, consider the use of email or social networking sites, (like the person in the chalkboard photo).

Need another idea yet? Check out this YouTube cover letter/resume where one young man took it upon himself to create a video, listing all of his attributes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW-wnaUs59Q

Now you wouldn?t be very original, unique, or distinguished if you copied these ideas in their entirety. Instead, use them to help you think of other creative ways to advertise yourself. You are special; your cover letter and resume should represent that.

Microsoft debuts Xbox music service to take on Apple

over 26 million songs. It also carries over 70,000 music videos, available only on the Xbox console. ? Reuters Photo

Mon Oct 15, 2012?- Microsoft Corp on Monday announced that Xbox Music, a digital music service to vie with Apple Inc?s iTunes and Amazon.com Inc?s Cloud Player, will be available for its Xbox game consoles on Tuesday.

The service will be expanded to Windows software-based computers and tablets, including the upcoming Surface tablet, from October 26, when Microsoft launches Windows 8. It will be expanded to phones shortly after that.

The world?s largest software maker has been trying for years to make the household living room an entertainment hub with its Xbox. More than 67 million units have been sold since 2005.

About 18 months ago, the company realized that Xbox users were spending half to 60 percent of their time on entertainment services rather than video gaming, Xbox Music general manager Jerry Johnson said.

The market-leading video game console already streams Netflix, ESPN and other channels and is bolstering its service with music and other video content.

?We also realize, as an entertainment company, that music is an important ingredient on its own and as a part of different user experiences,? Johnson said.

Xbox Music replaces Microsoft?s digital media brand Zune that struggled to compete with iTunes.

Microsoft will offer a free ad-supported music streaming service, and a premium $9.99 subscription service for unlimited, ad-free streaming.

The service includes a download-to-own music store with over 30 million songs in its global catalog, more than iTunes? library of over 26 million songs. It also carries over 70,000 music videos, available only on the Xbox console.

It has cloud-storage features similar to iTunes and Amazon Cloud Player and an artist-based radio function like music streaming services Pandora and Spotify.

Xbox Music will be available in 22 countries. Microsoft hopes to take the service to Apple iOS and Google Inc Android devices next year.

European satellite provider cuts off Iranian TV

PARIS (AP) ? A leading European satellite provider took 19 Iranian television and radio broadcasters off the air Monday as a result of European Union sanctions aimed at punishing human rights abusers.

People in Iran still have access to most of the channels, operated by Iranian state broadcaster Irib, but they're no longer broadcast in Europe and elsewhere.

Satellite provider Eutelsat agreed with media services company Arqiva to block the Irib channels as of Monday morning because of "reinforced EU council sanctions" Eutelsat spokeswoman Vanessa O'Connor said. Irib's access to Eutelsat was via a contract with Arqiva.

Eutelsat would not comment on eventual financial consequences of the cutoff. Iran's Press TV said Irib could take legal action against Eutelsat over the cutoff.

Irib's chief was among those targeted in a round of EU sanctions against Iran adopted in March, based on what European officials said were human rights violations in its programming, according to Eutelsat.

The EU has been toughening its sanctions against Iran, primarily to pressure the government to be more upfront about its nuclear program.

Press TV says it's among the channels cut by the Eutelsat decision. Others include Farsi-language channels for Iranian expatriates and Arabic-language offerings, including the news channel Al-Alam.

Alt-week 10.13.12: is the Universe a simulation, cloning dinosaurs and singing mice

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days.

Altweek 101312 is the Universe a simulation, cloning dinosaurs and singing mice

Are you reading this? Seriously, are you? Sure, we know you think you are, but what if you're just a sub-feature of a complex computer program. A sprite, nothing more than the creation of software. The problem with this question is, how would you ever know? You wouldn't, right? Well, not so fast there. Turns out, maybe there is a way to unravel the matrix (if there is one). It'll come as no surprise, that this is one of the topics in this week's collection of alternative stories. Think that's all we got? Not even close. We'll explore the truth behind cloning dinosaurs, as well a rare performance by singing mice -- all before dinner. Or is it really dinner? This is alt-week.

Tropical Storm Rafael dumps rain in east Caribbean

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) ? Tropical Storm Rafael churned away from the Virgin Islands early Sunday as forecasters warned the system could strengthen into a hurricane early in the week.

Rafael's was centered about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north-northwest of St. Martin at 5 a.m. EDT Sunday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. The storm had top sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving north-northwest at 13 mph (20 kph).

Forecasters said Rafael could become a hurricane by late Monday.

A tropical storm warning continued in effect for Anguilla early Sunday. But forecasters said a tropical storm warning has been discontinued for the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Montserrat and St. Martin, among other places.

Forecasters said a tropical storm watch has been discontinued for Puerto Rico.

Rafael could dump rainfall between 3 and 5 inches on some islands and possibly up to 10 inches in isolated spots over the lesser Antilles and the Virgin Islands. Potentially heavy rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, particularly in mountainous terrain, the hurricane center said. It also warned of possibly dangerous surf in some areas.

Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 175 miles (280 kms) from the center of the system, mainly to the northeast and east, forecasters said.

Interests in Bermuda have been urged to monitor the storm's progress as it moves away from the Virgin Islands and the Northern Leeward Islands.

Angel Investors Do Make Money, Data Shows 2.5X Returns Overall

Robert WiltbankEditor?s note: Robert Wiltbank, PhD, is a professor at Willamette University in Portland, Ore. He is co-author of Effectual Entrepreneurship?and of The Catalyst, as well as many academic articles in the fields of entrepreneurship and strategy. I began studying angel investing returns about 10 years ago as a result of a problem I couldn?t resolve. Over these years I?ve compiled the largest data set on angel investor financial returns that exists, through research backed by the Kauffman Foundation, NESTA (a UK-based entrepreneurship foundation), the University of Washington, and Willamette University. The best estimate of overall angel investor returns from this data is 2.5 times their investment, though in any one investment the odds of a positive return are less than 50 percent. This is absolutely competitive with venture capital returns.

Evaluating Medical Power of Attorney and Living Will | Marijuana for ...

by: charmainel20 - October 13th, 2012

The medical power of attorney and both living will are two important papers that help you to ensure that you may retain some amount of control on the procedure you receive in the event of any emergency. Both of them have legal validity and the decisions made for your therapy will soon be in respect to your desires. Your needs are accomplished by another individual appointed by you, even in your psychologically volatile problem or when you are not able to communicate as a result of unconsciousness or illness. It is often better to prepare both the documents and using cases, both are used together and it?s called the sophisticated directive. The living will is recognized as the first step to ensure that you are ready to face any kind of medical emergency when you?re not able to make choices for you. The living will suggests the important points of the medical procedures that you would want to execute on you in case there is disaster. The living will includes if the principal would like or never to resuscitated and also the wishes regarding number of medical ailments like vegetative state and coma. Before using decisions regarding the living will, it is important to talk to the family before including your desires to prevent any type of confusions in case there is emergency.Medical power of attorney is just a legal document that authorizes someone else to get health-related decisions if the principal can?t do so. If you are in good mental health this legal document should be designed and signed. Decisions can be taken by the attorney-in-fact authorized by you on behalf of you, when you are in a state of crisis or not in a state to take major decisions. The major difference between the living will and the medical directive is that the medical power of attorney is more flexible.Living will is beneficial only once the key is under the life supporting process to postpone the death or for keeping the unconscious condition permanent, however, not present any treatment for the issue. In these instances, the living will allow you to to authorize if the system must be taken or withheld. But medical power of attorney is useful in all sort of health choices which also includes life-sustaining treatments. You can reveal various desires in medical power of attorney and in living will. You can also mix the recommendations of both the papers in one single report. It is proposed to employ a simple document because your physician will be able to get all the information in one document and the agent also can be familiar with the precise instructions made by you. According to specialists, it?s strongly suggested to use medical power of attorney which also consists of some desires regarding the use of life sustaining program.

DirecTV Genie DVR and interface launch with advice for the indecisive

DirecTV Genie DVR and interface launch with five tuners, advice for the indecisive

We got a peek at DirecTV's Genie system just a few weeks ago with promises of a system that would both suggest related shows and optionally record them unbidden. It's here, and it's being joined by some rebranding. The company's flagship HR34 DVR has been relabeled as the Genie and makes the new software its centerpiece, with those five tuners letting even the chronically uncommitted take new recommendations as seriously as they like. As before, simultaneous viewing is otherwise the biggest angle: there's support for up to eight RVU-capable TVs hooked up at once, two shows playing on one TV and up to four TVs watching the same show. You'll have to be a new subscriber to get the video recorder under the Genie moniker, although we don't see too many existing customers dropping everything to get that symbolic distinction.

Movie review: 'Chicken With Plums' an inventive dish | The Salt Lake ...

Violinist Nasser Ali Khan (Mathieu Amalric) confines himself to his bedroom to die, in the drama "Chicken With Plums." Patricia Khan | Sony Pictures Classics

Review ? ?Persepolis? duo brings visual flair to live-action tale.

The lyrical fantasy "Chicken With Plums" is, like the recipe for which it?s named, a meaty dish with sweet-and-sour overtones.

This is the first live-action film by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, the team who made the riveting 2007 animated film "Persepolis." Like that film, this one is adapted from Satrapi?s graphic novel and is set in her former home, Iran.

?

HHHhj

?Chicken With Plums?

A melancholy musician waits for the end in this visually stunning drama from the makers of ?Persepolis.?

Where ? Broadway Centre Cinemas.

When ? Opens Friday, Oct. 12.

Rating ? PG-13 for some drug content, violent images, sensuality and smoking.

Running time ? 93 minutes; in French, with subtitles.

But where "Persepolis" was a gritty memoir of a girl?s growing up modern in a land rejecting Western modernism, "Chicken With Plums" is squarely set both in the past and the fantasy world of a dying man?s dreams.

It begins with a renowned violinist, Nasser Ali Khan (played by the French star Mathieu Amalric), who has given up the will to make music. So he decides to go to bed and die there. Eight days later, he does. (This information is given very early in the film.) What Satrapi and Paronnaud show next is how those eight days proceed.

Each day in bed, Nasser Ali contemplates what led him to want his life to end. We see his loveless marriage to the sensible Faringuisse ("Pulp Fiction?s" Maria de Medeiros), who supports the family when Nasser Ali?s music cannot. We meet his imperious mother (Isabella Rossellini) and his aged music teacher (Didier Flamand), a master who praises his student?s technique but hears no soul ? no "sigh" ? in his music.

We also see the woman, Iran (Golshifteh Farahani), who gave him that sigh.

Satrapi and Paronnaud, in flights of cinematic fancy, also take the story forward past Nasser Ali?s death. We witness what becomes of his daughter, Lili (played as a jaded adult by Chiara Mastroianni), and his son, Cyrus (played by Christian Friedel, in a hilarious parody of American sitcoms). And, in Nasser Ali?s nightmares, we see his encounter with the angel of death (Edouard Baer).

Amalric, best known to Americans from "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and as the last Bond villain (in "Quantum of Solace"), gives a performance that leaps from the melancholy to rapturous. At the same time, he anchors Satrapi and Paronnaud?s magical visual range and an emotional journey that zips from ecstasy to tragedy and back again.

The Physical Benefits of Zen Meditation - The Zen Blog of Rachid ...

What comes to mind when the benefits of Zen meditation are mentioned? Most people will mention the spiritual and mental benefits of the meditation process. Such statements are accurate but they are not entirely complete. That is, there are physical benefits to Zen meditation as well. This is a very good thing because you cannot have a healthy mind or spirit if your body is weak.

When you meditate regularly you will discover your sleep becomes more restful. This is no minor benefit. Having proper and deep sleeping patterns help your body with its metabolic function. This is because muscle repairs itself during the body?s resting stage. As a result, your ability to develop lean muscle mass is optimized. This will have many benefits towards your overall health and fitness levels.

There have been numerous reports that regular meditation can improve the immune system. A stronger immune system means you will be more resistance to common colds, flu, and other maladies. It also means you can recover quicker from when these ?bugs? affect you.

We often equate alleviating stress with mental health but it also goes hand in hand with physical health. That is because a person who lives relatively stress free will not be susceptible to the common (serious) ailments that can affect the heart. To say that a healthy heart is vital to living a long and healthy life would be a dramatic understatement.

Additionally, Zen meditation has been reported to reduce cholesterol levels. High levels of cholesterol are often blamed for heart ailments. So, consider Zen meditation?s positive impact on cholesterol levels yet another way it can improve heart health.

Zen meditation has been known to reduce blood pressure. This is often attributed due to the calming effect that meditation provides. Considering the fact that high blood pressure often contributes to a number of maladies, the ability of Zen meditation to lower blood pressure is a huge plus.

On Oct. 12-14, 18-21, and 25-28, Raleigh Little Theatre will present a community-theater production of Alfred Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps in its Cantey V. Sutton Theatre. English actor, comedian, and playwright Patrick Barlow adapted this knee-slapping 2005 farce from John Buchan?s classic 1915 adventure novel and Alfred Hitchcock?s edge-of-your-seat 1935 motion-picture thriller based on Buchan?s nail-biting espionage story.

Set in Scotland and London, this madcap stage adaptation of The 39 Steps had its world premiere in June 2005 at West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, England. Revised and redubbed John Buchan?s The 39 Steps, the show had its London premiere, directed by Maria Aitken, on Aug. 10, 2006 at the Tricycle Theatre, and transferred in September 2006 to the Criterion Theatre in London?s West End, where it won the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

After having its U.S. premiere on Sept. 19, 2007 at Boston University, Alfred Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps made its Broadway debut, also directed by Maria Aitken, on Jan. 15, 2008 at American Airlines Theatre, later transferred to the Cort Theatre and then to the Helen Hayes Theatre, where it played for a combined total of 771 performances before closing on Jan. 10, 2010. The show starred Charles Edwards as Richard Hannay, Jennifer Ferrin as Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret, Cliff Saunders as Man #1, and Arnie Burton as Man #2, with Man #1 and Man #2 each playing dozens of characters.

Nominated for six 2008 Tony Awards?, including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play, The 39 Steps won Tonys for Best Lighting Design of a Play (Kevin Adams) and Best Sound Design of a Play (Mic Pool), plus a 2008 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.

After closing on Broadway, The 39 Steps reopened Off-Broadway at the New World Stages Stage I on April 15, 2010, and played there until Jan. 16, 2011.

Long-time Raleigh Little Theatre director Haskell Fitz-Simons will stage Alfred Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps with an all-star cast that includes Jesse R. Gephart as Richard Hannay; Staci Sabarsky as Annabella Schmidt, Margaret, and Pamela; and Tony Hefner and Del Flack as the Clowns who impersonate all the other characters that Hannay encounters during his attempt to expose an espionage ring. (Gephart played one of the Clowns in Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy?s fabulous 2011 Triangle premiere presentation of this veritable laff riot.)
