230 Million Year Old Arthropods Found Preserved in Amber ...

amber-preserved-arthropods-triassic

Arthropods from the Triassic period have been discovered preserved in amber. They are 100 million years older than previous amber inclusions. The two mites and one fly were found in millimeter-scale droplets of amber from northeastern Italy.

Researchers published their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Arthropods are invertebrate animals including insects, arachnids and crustaceans. The specimens were preserved with microscopic fidelity, allowing the estimation of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years. Arthropods are more than 400 million years old, but before now the oldest record of these animals in amber dates to about 130 million years, in the Cretaceous period.

The amber droplets range between 2 to 6 mm in length, were buried in the Dolomite Alps of northeastern Italy and excavated by Eugenio Ragazzi and Guido Roghi of the University of Padova. Over 70,000 droplets were screened for inclusions by a team of German scientists led by Alexander Schmidt, of the Georg-August University in G?ttingen.

Two of the specimens are a new species of mites, Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica. They are the oldest fossils of a group called Eriophyoidea, which has about 3,500 living species, all of which feed on plants and sometimes form abnormal growth called galls on their bodies.

amber-droplets

T. fedelei and A. triassica fed on a now extinct conifer, but 97% of today?s gall mites feed on flowering plants. These mites existed before the appearance of flowering plants. The mites seemed to have evolved and endured even when flowering plants entered the environment. The fly couldn?t be identified because some of its body parts weren?t well preserved.

There was a huge change in flora and fauna in the Triassic, because it was right after one of the most acute extinction pulses in the geological time record, the Permian-Triassic extinction event, which occurred 252.28 Ma. This could help elucidate how life continued to evolve.

Feuding Russian tycoons face London court ruling

LONDON (AP) ? Two Russian businessmen rose to riches together in the chaotic years of post-Soviet Russia and then became archenemies ? and a British judge will soon rule on which oligarch will defeat the other in a multi-billion-dollar court battle.

After a seven-month delay, Judge Elizabeth Gloster is expect to deliver a summary ruling Friday to settle the legal feud between Roman Abramovich, the billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner, and self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky.

The feud, the most high-profile commercial case at London's High Court in recent years, has fascinated the British and Russian media with intriguing tales about the tycoons' jet-setting lives and the lawless Wild West years that followed the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.

Berezovsky, 66, is a former Kremlin power broker who fled to Britain after falling out with President Vladimir Putin. He sued the 45-year-old Abramovich, who he calls his former friend, prot?g? and business partner, alleging that Abramovich threatened him into selling his stakes in the Russian oil giant Sibneft vastly beneath their value. Berezovsky alleged blackmail and breach of contract ? and is seeking more than 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) in damages.

Abramovich has denied the allegations and his lawyer has accused Berezovsky of lying and making up stories.

"I'm an optimistic person, it's in my genes. So, of course, I'm confident that the judgment will go my way," Berezovsky said ahead of the ruling.

Abramovich's lawyers did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.

Both tycoons were cross-examined and sat across each other in the courtroom on most days during the four-month trial, which attracted large crowds of journalists, lawyers and spectators.

The case has sparked so much interest partly because of its focus on the two oligarchs' personal, as well as business, relationship. They were said to have become friends after meeting on a private cruise in the Caribbean, built a business empire together, but parted bitterly when their fortunes were reversed.

Berezovsky, a mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, amassed his wealth during Russia's privatization of state assets in the early 1990s. In return for backing former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, he gained powerful political connections and access to valuable assets at very low prices.

Berezovsky says he mentored the younger Abramovich, treated him like a son, and founded Sibneft with him and a third partner. Berezovsky claimed that the friendship faltered when he fell out with Putin, at which point Abramovich "intimidated" him into selling his Sibneft shares ? causing him losses of almost $6 billion.

In separate claims, Berezovsky also alleged breach of trust and breach of contract when Abramovich sold Berezovsky's alleged stake in aluminum conglomerate Rusal without his consent.

Abramovich claims that Berezovsky was not his mentor and never owned the stakes ? in fact, he argued that Berezovsky only had a political role in creating Sibneft and never "contributed a single cent" to acquiring or building up the company.

According to Abramovich, he had already paid more than $2.5 billion to Berezovsky for his services as his "political godfather" ? a protector whose political influence helped him do business ? and reluctantly funded Berezovsky's extravagant lifestyle of yachts and vacation homes because he feared retaliation. He doesn't owe Berezovsky any more money, he said.

"Our business relationship was over and yet he still treated me as his 'cash cow' and expected me to fund all of his expenses," Abramovich claimed in a statement. He described Berezovsky as ambitious, sometimes megalomaniacal, and a man who "would often start believing his own PR."

Charged in Russia with fraud and embezzlement, Berezovsky has been living in London since 2001.

Abramovich lives in Russia and is known to some as the "stealth oligarch" because of his low profile, but is widely known in Britain since he bought the Chelsea soccer club in 2003. His wealth is estimated to be 9.5 billion pounds (about $15 billion) by The Sunday Times.

The pair's feud is just one among many lucrative commercial fraud cases dealing with Russia and Central Asia that have found their way into London courts. Lawyers say many wealthy Russians distrust the legal infrastructure in their own country and flock to English courtrooms because they believe they can find fairness there.

Friday's summary verdict will be followed soon after by the handing down of an extended judgment, and lawyers from both sides will meet in the next few weeks to discuss appeals and legal costs.

Union student jailed after photo of disabled student using restroom is posted on Twitter

Jonathan David Devito, 18, was arrested at 2:45 p.m. at the school by Tulsa County sheriff's deputies, his arrest report states.

A teacher alerted school officials that "several students were upset over a picture that was posted on Twitter," according to Devito's arrest report.

The photo showed a 16-year-old with his pants and underwear pulled down using the urinal, the report says.

The concerned students named Devito as the person responsible for sending the picture, and deputies wrote that Devito admitted to an assistant principal that he had taken a picture of the student and sent it to friends via Twitter.

Devito is in the Tulsa Jail on complaints of being a peeping Tom with electronic equipment, manufacturing child pornography, distributing child pornography and violating of the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act. He is being held without bail.

The State of Oklahoma classifies the publication, distribution or participation in the preparation of child pornography as a felony.

If convicted, Devito could be sentenced on each count to as much as 20 years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both, and he would be required to register as a sex offender.

A conviction as a peeping Tom with electronic equipment is considered a felony and is punishable by five years in prison, a $5,000 fine or both.

A felony violation of the Computer Crimes Act charge can result in a maximum 10-year prison term, a $100,000 fine or both.

A misdemeanor violation is punishable by 30 days in jail, a $5,000 fine or both.

Gretchen Haas-Bethell, the communications director for Union Public Schools, issued a statement Thursday:

"At Union we take the safety and dignity of our students very seriously. When we were made aware of an incident at the high school, we immediately took steps to protect the well-being of our students. We notified the appropriate parties and law enforcement officials."

Japan's surprisingly weak industrial output darkens economic outlook

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's industrial output unexpectedly fell as factories cut output to key Chinese and European markets while a leading indicator for manufacturing hovered at its lowest in 16 months, in a troubling sign that Japan's broad economy is weakening.

Industrial output dropped 1.2 percent in July compared with a median estimate for a 1.7 percent increase in a Reuters poll and followed a 0.4 percent gain in June.

In a further sign of trouble ahead, the purchasing managers index for August showed manufacturing activity contracted for a third straight month as domestic and external demand suffer.

Manufacturers said they expect output to rise only modestly in August and then fall again in September, which could increase the chance that the economy will contract in the third quarter and pressure policymakers to bolster growth.

"Exports to China and the European Union have been decreasing, so electronics parts makers are cutting back on production to adjust inventories," said Seiji Adachi, senior economist at Deutsche Securities.

"Forecasts for August and September show that output is on a downtrend."

Asia's other major exporters are also feeling the pinch from the slowdown in global demand. South Korea's industrial output, which closely tracks exports of smartphones, cars, ships and machinery, fell a larger-than-expected 1.6 percent in July from June, data showed on Friday.

The yen showed little response to the surprisingly weak industrial output and PMI data. But the downbeat figures underpinned benchmark 10-year JGB futures, which had opened up ahead of the output data.

"The Bank of Japan has to downgrade quite considerably their economic outlook going forward, given these figures, and I think this will put them in a very tight spot because they've already promised a 1 percent inflation rate," said Shogo Fujita, chief Japan bond strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Manufacturers surveyed by Japan's trade ministry expect output to rise 0.1 percent in August and then decrease 3.3 percent in September.

The Markit/JMMA Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) fell to a seasonally adjusted 47.7 in August from 47.9 in July. The index reached the lowest level since April 2011, one month after the earthquake struck Japan's northeast coast.

Japan's core consumer price index (CPI), which includes oil products but excludes volatile prices of fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood, in July fell 0.3 percent from a year earlier, separate data showed. That matched the median estimate, showing that deflationary pressure remains persistent.

The so-called core-core inflation index, which excludes food and energy prices and is similar to the core index used in the United States, fell 0.6 percent in the year to July, data from the internal affairs ministry showed.

Japan's economy has so far outpaced growth of most G7 countries on solid private consumption and reconstruction spending.

But exports in July posted the sharpest annual drop in six months, in line with trends seen in other export-driven Asian economies, casting doubt on Japan's recovery prospects.

The Bank of Japan frets that the timing of a recovery may be delayed, but wants to hold off on easing monetary policy again -- after having acted in February and April -- unless risks heighten enough to kill any chance of a recovery.

Should the economy require more fiscal stimulus, the policy response could be delayed as the government is locked in a dispute with opposition parties over foreign policy. (Additional reporting by Lisa Twaronite; Writing by Stanley White; Editing by Jacqueline Wong)

SwiftKey's 2012 survey results are in - here are some highlights

SwiftKey

Remember back in June when SwiftKey had a contest with Mobile Nations that offered three tablets as prizes to survey takers? The results are in, and some of the data looks pretty interesting.

Granted, the sample size and demographic make these results a bit skewed compared to a survey given at a grocery store, or even a carrier store (you folks are smart and opinionated), but it's nice to peer into the collective mind that is the Mobile Nations Borg reader base.

What's most interesting is the changes from just a year ago. It's pretty cool to see what you guys think, and how it changes. Hit the jump and have a look.

(AP) ? Lance Armstrong introduced himself as a seven-time Tour de France champion at a cancer conference in Montreal on Wednesday.

"My name is Lance Armstrong. I am a cancer survivor," he said to open his speech to the World Cancer Congress. "I'm a father of five. And yes, I won the Tour de France seven times."

Armstrong announced last week he would no longer challenge the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's drug charges against him. USADA threw out his competitive victories dating to 1998, which would include all seven Tour wins.

Armstrong, who has maintained his innocence, focused on his experience as a cancer survivor and the work of his charitable foundation. He added he refuses to be distracted from the fight against cancer.

Sony Making Console Wars Movie, Declaring Playstation Victor ...

Could this be THE SOCIAL NETWORK of video games?

Remember when you were all skeptical that a Facebook movie could work? Prepare to be skeptical that a movie about video game consoles could work. According to Fusible, Sony has latched on to a whole bunch of domain names, and they all have something in common:

console-war.net
console-warmovie.com
console-wars.net
console-warsmovie.com
consolewar-movie.com
consolewar-movie.net
consolewar.net

theconsolewar-movie.com
theconsolewar-movie.net
theconsolewar.net
theconsolewarmovie.com
theconsolewars-movie.com
theconsolewars-movie.net
theconsolewarsmovie.com

Console wars, of course, seems to refer to the endless competition between video game consoles. But which war? Nintendo vs Master System? Xbox vs Playstation? 360 vs PS3? Or the next generation console war, which is probably ginning up behind the scenes as we speak?

Kris Tapley of In Contention tweeted that the project, which he described as 'awesome,' was being pitched exactly as?The Social Network?of video games.

I think it probably has to be about Microsoft vs Sony, just because I'm having a hard time picturing a major movie studio making a 1980s period piece starring all Japanese actors. And because Sony would like to market their own video game system, thank you very much.

But what's the larger story here? Is there scandal and drama that I don't know about in the history of Xbox vs PlayStation? You tell me, I seriously have no idea.

Vitamins, Minerals May Help Older Men's Sperm Stay Healthy ...

TUESDAY, Aug. 28 (HealthDay News) ? A diet that contains high amounts of certain vitamins and minerals is associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men, researchers say.

In a study of 80 healthy men, aged 22 to 80, investigators found that those older than 44 who consumed the most vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and folate had 20 percent less sperm DNA damage than those who consumed the lowest amounts of these so-called ?micronutrients.?

However, a higher intake of these vitamins and minerals was not associated with improved sperm DNA quality in younger men.

The study, published in the Aug. 27 online issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility, was led by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy?s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

?It appears that consuming more micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folate and zinc helps turn back the clock for older men. We found that men 44 and older who consumed at least the recommended dietary allowance of certain micronutrients had sperm with a similar amount of DNA damage as the sperm of younger men,? Andy Wyrobek, of the Life Sciences Division at Berkeley Lab, said in a lab news release.

?This means that men who are at increased risk of sperm DNA damage because of advancing age can do something about it. They can make sure they get enough vitamins and micronutrients in their diets or through supplements,? Wyrobek added.

The findings are important because an increasing number of men over 35 years of age are having children, which raises public health concerns, the researchers pointed out in the news release.

Previous research has shown that as men age, they are more likely to have sperm DNA damage. This explains why older men are less fertile and at increased risk for having children with genetic defects.

Until now, scientists haven?t known whether a diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients might help protect against age-related damage in sperm DNA. Further research is needed to determine if higher vitamin intake and improved sperm DNA quality in older men will help improve their fertility and the health of their children.

While the study uncovered an association between consumption of micronutrients and sperm DNA quality, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine has more about older men and fertility.

Jackson family in Gary to mark pop star's birthday

(AP) ? Michael Jackson's son and daughter visited their father's hometown of Gary on what would have been the pop star's 54th birthday.

The children, 14-year-old Paris and 15-year-old Prince, were given T-shirts by Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson as they posed for pictures Wednesday at a casino overlooking Lake Michigan.

Nothing was said by the children during the brief presentation.

A vigil was planned later Wednesday at the house at 2300 Jackson St. where the King of Pop, his siblings and their parents lived until 1969. In the days after Jackson's death, fans piled stuffed animals, flowers and photos outside the home.

Other events planned by the family in Gary include a dinner on Friday and a concert on Saturday.

'2016: Obama's America' ? Will political documentary sway undecided voters?

'2016: Obama's America,' which is being screened at Tampa hotels hosting Republican National Convention-goers, is already the top grossing non-nature documentary of the year.?

August may be the laziest month for Hollywood blockbusters, but it has become open season?for little-films-that-can. And this year is no exception, with the political documentary ?2016: Obama?s America,? pulling in more than $9 million to become the top grossing non-nature documentary of the year.

The film, from conservative author Dinesh D?Souza, which began playing in theaters nationwide this past weekend and has gone viral online, is a slow ? and selective ? trip through Obama?s backstory. It?leads viewers to the narrator?s conclusion that the president?s goals are to realize his Kenyan father?s anti-imperialist dreams.

The documentary is currently screening in Tampa hotels hosting guests at the Republican National Convention, where its themes have been warmly embraced.

But the real question is, at this late date, will such a film make a difference in an election that by most accounts will be determined by a razor-thin margin of voters who have yet to make up their minds?

The film most likely will not sway many independent voters directly, says David Mark, editor in chief of Politix, an online and mobile site for citizen?s input, and author of ?Going Dirty: the Art of Negative Campaigning.? But, says Mr. Mark, a former senior editor of POLITICO, where the film might have an impact is in the nitty-gritty of an election.

?It could energize the base into all the kinds of things that can turn out voters, like walking the precinct, manning phone banks, and all the kinds of volunteer stuff that juices up supporters,? he points out.

Soon-to-be Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be the most likely to benefit, adds Mark, who says the film has been a hot topic on conservative talk radio, where hosts have been urging supporters to go see the film. ?Everyone likes to say they don?t want negative campaigning and movies like this, but the truth is that the reason we continue to have it is because it works,? he says, adding, ?negativity gets people to participate.?

The surprise success of the film suggests it is part of a ?new normal? in US politics, says John Johannes, a professor of political science at Villanova University in Philadelphia.

Filmmaker Michael Moore ?probably should be credited (or blamed) with advancing this type of political advertising, an effort to add a veneer of respectability and authority to coat anti-candidate politics,? Professor Johannes says via e-mail. This type of politicking is more likely to appeal to those already committed for or against Obama, he notes, adding that he would be surprised if this movie changed any minds.

?It is, however, yet another indicator of what is happening to American politics,? he says: ?Trying to pin down candidates for their backgrounds more than their policies; a focus on personalities more than issues; and a play to anger and fear rather than to thoughtfulness and judgment.?

But some say this film suggests otherwise ? that this election may actually hinge on more than negativity, says journalist John Graves, editor of The Retirement Journal and author of ?The 7% Solution.?

Mr. Graves says he and his wife went to the film over the weekend.

?The film itself was instructive for its view from outside the inner workings of the US politic,? he says via e-mail, adding that it was valuable to witness what he dubs ?the raw exploitation of power by a man who knows himself and his destiny very well.? Beyond that, he says, ?if the issues as described in the film are also descriptive of the ?whole piece? landscape, it will be a metaphysical election (one guided by principles).?

The film?s power may also be a harbinger of things to come, points out April Masini, online advice expert at askapril.com.

She says a large part of the audience will be already-decided Republican voters, those ?who want verification that they're doing the right thing, and something to talk about among themselves.? But the valuable audience, she points out, will be those undecided voters who can make or break a popular vote in a close race.

But she adds, ?The anti-Obama documentary will also be a measure of how important films and documentaries are to swinging a vote in the age of fast technology like Twitter, e-mail and tabloid news. If this documentary is perceived as being effective, buckle up for more politicians in Hollywood.??

Video: At convention, Romney campaign emphasizes diversity

>>> back here at this gop convention in tampa, florida, we thought we'd get a sense of this convention floor, even though we're really in ernest just underway this one night. chuck todd is in the midst of the michigan delegation. you see everybody else there, chuck, beginning with michigan , i saw they had some gerald ford commemorative michigan wolverines football jerseys tonight. i thought that was a nice touch in honor of the years of service he put into the republican party in the united states .

>> he is a 230rformer all american. and it is michigan that got the coveted front row spot, where mitt romney was born. not the state he governed nor the state he spends a lot of time in now, new hampshire . right now, we're showing you the northern mariana islands . they left off the s on the poster there. the virgin islands got good access here. new hampshire good access. as you know, in conventions, republicans have been praised for having diversity on the podium, but not diversity in the audience. the audience made sure their most diverse delegation got good front row seats so when the cameras pan, you will see a more diverse audience. of course, one thing to remind you, all of these folks in guam, the u.s. virgin islands , none of their votes count in november.

>> chuck todd down there at the michigan delegation. brings us to andrea mitchell over in new hampshire . andrea?

>> reporter: well, speaking of diversity, the romney campaign knows they have a gender gap , they have a problem. they're going to try to solve that, partly by showcasing a lot of women. they have a diverse group of rising stars in the party, they have new mexico governor susannah martinez, south carolina governor , nikki haley , and tonight from new hampshire , these great college kids that are here. later tonight, kelly ayod is going to be here. they don't want to talk about todd akin , they're going to talk about economic issues, and specifically joe dailey, he has a landscaping business in new hampshire . she wanted to practice the speech for him, he said he wanted it to be a surprise. he'll hear it tonight for the first time.

>> andrea mitchell in new hampshi hampshire . john yang has made it up 95 to the great state of maine . the krcredentials committee stripped the state of ten ron paul zedelegates. ron paul will not be speaking at the convention because he didn't want to endorse him, and he didn't want his speech vetted by the romney campaign. his supporters are making themselves heard, they're angry about the fact that the rules changes that the romney camp is pushing through this convention. one oklahoma delegate told me they have just made all the activists mad. even though ron paul is not speaking here, he will be in the hall tomorrow night to hear one member of his family speak, senator rand paul will address the convention, and ron paul will be here to hear it.

>> we had some very vocal ron paul supporters at our booth today. and now to luke russert who's made his way to the great state of west virginia .

>> reporter: festive garb has been a tradition here. folks from colorado putting the west in mountain west , eastern american samoa wearing their traditional garb. and you all saw michigan , gerald ford , the iconic jersey from america's postage lettic president. and here in west virginia , a state that loves domestic energy and is very proud of their coal miners they're wearing a hard hat to honor those folks that live in that state. they are bringing a little bit of their home state to tampa.

>> give our best to west virginia . luke russert rounding out the coverage.

>>> our prime time coverage starts tonight with mrs. romney 's speech to this gathering, and the keynote by chris christie from new jersey. that's beginning tonight at 10:00 eastern, 7:00 pacific.

Entrepreneurs Find Personal Loans Can Help Finance Business Startup Expenses

Being short-term loans that assist your immediate cash needs, unsecured loans can help finance business startup expenses. Typically unsecured loans are a single payout loan with a high interest rate. The borrower usually returns the borrowed funds with curiosity about one go instead of paying monthly installment. Generally, personal loans are not recommended because of their high interest rates. A borrower may find it hard to repay the whole debt in a single shot, however, with business startup's the situation is indeed different! Let's see how different finance options can help to save your day for business startup's.

Typical Business Start-up Expenses

After you have decided to start a business you will most likely possess a solid strategic business plan which will detail your initial financial requirements. Typical business start-up expenses could be broadly split into overheads and variable expenses. Something that continues to be constant with nearly every new business, is that you need some money to buy inventory, lease a building, start an advertising program and work towards your first sale. Unsecured loans are extremely useful in financing those overhead expenses that usually occur at the beginning like a one-time cost. Variable expenses are those that continuously exist in the entire process of conducting a business and tend to be associated with sales projections.

For example, in case of a software business start-up, the administrative costs, licensing costs, initial infrastructure setup cost would constitute expenses. On the other hand client visits, traveling for demonstrations etc. would constitute variable costs that will keep occurring each time there is a potential client and may not be predictable. Also, irrespective of sales, expenses will still remain to keep the setup active!

Before you decide to borrow any money, it is vital to have a repayment schedule as well as projected strategic business plan, to know how your cash flow will operate. When you segregate your expenditure into fixed overhead costs and variable expenses, you have to straighten out the expenses that'll be one-time events. A company loan or credit line can help with these one-time costs provided your business is able to afford it once projected sales start to be realized! You have to anticipate all possible scenarios and be sure enough cash flow within the period of few months before you take an unsecured loan.

Kinds of Unsecured loans

The good thing about this financing, is that it often can be obtained with or without security collateral. A secured personal bank loan involves borrowing against an asset such as your property. If you default on your repayment, the lending company can claim your asset! On the other hand, unsecured financing, does not need collateral, however, the lending company generally protects his loan from possible default by charging you a high rate of interest. In case of a default, the lender may turn to legal channels to recover the total amount.

If you are confident of repayment, it is advisable to go for a secured personal loan wherein you are able to negotiate a low annual percentage rate (APR) while pledging your home or car or any other asset.

In case your business startup requires funding that cannot be met by a single personal loan, you may also borrow more than one loan. The more you expose you to ultimately your debt scenario, the greater financial risk you're exposing yourself and your business to. You should conduct thorough research and get ready for contingencies. It is usually best to dig to your own savings or borrow from close relatives if they're ready however, for those that need immediate cash along with a large amount at this, an unsecured loan could be a lifesaver. In fact, should you successfully repay your personal loan within the stipulated time, you could even get a good credit rating which will improve for future years of your business!

Pakistan clerics urge fairness for 'blasphemy' girl

The head of Pakistan's leading body of Muslim clerics Tuesday demanded fair treatment for a young Christian girl accused of blasphemy, as a medical report said she appeared to be mentally subnormal.

Allama Tahir Ashrafi, chairman of the All Pakistan Ulema Council, said if Rimsha, accused of burning papers containing verses from the Koran, was found to be innocent, her accusers should face justice.

The cleric said protesters who demonstrated to demand punishment for the girl, who reportedly suffers from Down's Syndrome, were following the "law of the jungle".

Rimsha has been held since August 16 under the Islamic republic's strict blasphemy laws, prompting concern from Western governments and the Vatican and anger from rights groups.

After confliciting reports about her age, she was taken on Monday from prison to hospital for tests, which said she was "approximately 14", according to the assessment by a seven-doctor panel seen by AFP.

The local cleric who handed Rimsha over to police insisted on Friday that she was fully aware of what she was doing when she burned the papers, but the medical report suggested she may be mentally impaired.

"She appears uneducated and her mental age appears below her chronological age," the single-page report said.

Around 120 uniformed police officers guarded the hospital during Rimsha's visit, a senior doctor told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Blasphemy is an extremely sensitive subject in the nation of 180 million people, 97 percent of whom are Muslims, and those convicted of defaming Islam or desecrating the Koran can face life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

In July a mob of more than 2,000 snatched a mentally unstable man from a police station, beat him to death and torched his body after he was accused of burning pages from a Koran.

Ashrafi urged the government to take action to protect Christians in the poor Islamabad suburb of Mehrabad, where Rimsha lives, and encourage Christian families who fled in fear after the incident to return.

"This is inhuman that those who have nothing to do with the case or are not a party to it are also being harassed," Ashrafi told AFP.

"It is just like the law of jungle that 500 people approached a police station and got a report forcibly lodged with the police."

Human rights activists have warned blasphemy laws are often used to settle personal vendettas and last year two prominent politicians were assassinated for speaking out against the legislation.

Ashrafi said Rimsha's case should be a watershed for Pakistan's blasphemy laws.

"We demand an impartial and thorough investigation into the case. Strict action should be taken against all those accusing the girl if she is found innocent," he said.

"The government should make this case an example so that nobody will dare misuse the blasphemy law in future."

The intervention from Ashrafi, a prominent member of the Defence of Pakistan council, a coalition of right-wing and hardline Islamist groups, was somewhat unexpected, but he warned that if the case was mishandled it would reflect badly on Muslims.

"It happened many times that weak probes in such cases led to defaming our religion. It is because of this reason that we have demanded a thorough and fair probe," he said.

After Rimsha's age was determined by doctors, her lawyer Tahir Naveed Chaudhry said they had applied to have her case proceed under juvenile law.

At a brief hearing in the case on Tuesday, Judge Raja Jawad Hassan adjourned proceedings until Thursday after defence lawyers submitted a bail application.

Bright arctic clouds formed by exhaust from final space shuttle launch

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Naval Research Laboratory scientist Dr. Michael Stevens is leading an international consortium of scientists in tracking the rapid transport of the exhaust plume from the final launch of the space shuttle in July 2011. The team has found that the plume moved quickly to the Arctic, forming unusually bright polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs) there a day after launch.

Understanding the rapid transport of high altitude exhaust plumes near 105 km is providing new insight into the effects of winds at the bottom edge of the space weather regime towards improved forecasts of the co-located E-region of the ionosphere. This knowledge is critical for improving models of communication signal propagation and over-the-horizon-radar, explains Dr. Stevens, a Research Physicist in NRL's Space Science Division. Current theories suggest that the plumes are rapidly transported because of narrow, high-speed wind shears. These wind shears are also linked to the occurrence of so-called Sporadic E events, thus establishing a possible link between plume transport and the lower ionosphere.

During every launch, the space shuttle injects about 350 tons of water vapor from its three main engines off the east coast of the United States between 100 and 115 km altitude. Many studies have now shown that the poleward transport of this water vapor is much faster than global-scale models predict, and a few have furthermore shown that bursts of PMCs near 83 km altitude can result. These observations are forcing researchers to reexamine their understanding of global wind patterns in the lower thermosphere.

The long-term PMC record is also likely to be modified by increased space traffic, which is important because PMCs have been implicated as indicators of upper atmospheric climate change, explains Dr. Stevens. By assembling a suite of satellite and ground-based observations following the space shuttle's final launch, the NRL-led research team has revealed the nature of these shuttle clouds for the first time. The observations from both European and American collaborators show not only the rapid poleward transport of the plume and ensuing PMC formation, but that shuttle clouds are brighter than over 99% of all other PMCs and that the ice particles are larger at higher altitudes, which is the opposite of conventional models.

By allowing researchers to distinguish the shuttle PMCs from more typical clouds, these results will ultimately enable a search of the historical record to separate the anthropogenic PMCs from the natural PMCs.

Real Estate Investing: 2 New Marketing Strategies [Pick One ...

What?s your real estate marketing philosophy or umbrella strategy which guides your brand and tactics?

Are you just blasting out random marketing messages based on whatever you are told you should be doing in the moment or do you have a real strategy which will ensure your long term success?

If not, it?s time you did?

2 New Marketing Strategies to Choose from: Politician vs. Philanthropist

1. Campaigning for More Real Estate Investing Business

A recent Realtor Mag article proposed a ?Mayorism? marketing strategy and asked how your marketing would be different if this was a political race rather than real estate investing. Most would instantly associate running a political campaign with lies, propaganda, slamming the competition and of course burying your dirt so the other guy doesn?t find it. Clearly, while this all works it may not be the position a lot of investors want to take.

However, there are some good takeaways from this strategy if you think about it more in depth. TV ads, hosting dinners and social media can all be good tools for real estate investing marketing as can focusing on a niche and building a team. However, the related article also suggested a more offline focused drive with online marketing as an afterthought which probably isn?t the most cost effective move today.

2. The Philanthropist Approach

Before you get all worried about this strategy cramping your real estate investing income remember that Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are both considered both 2 of the wealthiest individuals of our time and the biggest philanthropists.

This doesn?t mean giving everything away either. Rather this strategy focuses on the prospect and making it all about serving them to the maximum. Remember the more people you serve the more money you will make. Find more renters to give the American Dream, find more homeowners to bail out and find more private lenders to earn better returns and you?ll make a lot more money, almost effortlessly.

George Washington University Computational Biology Director solves

WASHINGTON ? The origin of Cerataspis monstrosa has been a mystery as deep as the ocean waters it hails from for more than 180 years. For nearly two centuries, researchers have tried to track down the larva that has shown up in the guts of other fish over time but found no adult counterpart. Until now.

George Washington University Biology Professor Keith Crandall cracked the code to the elusive crustacean's DNA this summer. His findings were recently published in the journal "Ecology and Evolution," and his research was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative. In it, Dr. Crandall, the senior author of the paper, explains how "monster larva" and the deep-water aristeid shrimp known as Plesiopenaeus armatus are one in the same: larvae and adult forms of the same species.

Attempts to find the adult incarnation of the larva weren't without significant effort over the span of time. The crustacean's ability to morph into a shrimp bearing no resemblance to its juvenile form was a challenge as externally, the two couldn't be more different.

C. monstrosa, has heavy armor, a thick body and exceptional horn ornamentation. Described as "monstrous and misshapen animal," it is the preferred meal for its predators such as skipjack, yellowfin and blackfin tuna and dolphin. The Plesiopenaeus, resembles a lobster or crab with its red, enclosed exterior and is elusive. It calls the deep sea waters such as the Atlantic Ocean home but finding the specimen to make a match has proven to be difficult for zoologists.

Dr. Crandall said it was not until the late 19th century that researchers started to suspect a link between the Cerataspis and some of the deep sea shrimp. Mid-water oceanic collections in the northern Gulf of Mexico unexpectedly included a single specimen of C. monstrosa for genetic analyses.

"Because previous studies suggested an affinity between Cerataspis and penaeoid shrimp, and more specifically the family Aristeidae, we sampled heavily within these groups," he said. The Crandall lab has been collecting crustacean DNA sequence data for a number of years and therefore had an excellent reference database to compare the Cerataspis DNA.

That's when analysis placed the larva and the deep-sea shrimp as one in the same.

"It's very exciting to have solved a nearly 200-year-old conundrum," said Dr. Crandall. "This was a project that involved having good luck with obtaining the sample, exceptional field knowledge to preserve the specimen and know that it was something special, outstanding state-of-the-art molecular and analytical tools to collect unique data that have only been available in the last 10 years to answer this question and to have an outstanding database of reference sequences to compare against."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also supported some of the research by providing financial support for the ship time, ship, crew members and collection resources.

"Larval-adult linkages not only aid in our understanding of biodiversity, they provide insights into the life history, distribution and ecology of an organism," said Dr. Crandall.

Are Republican convention and platform too long? John Boehner thinks so.

The Monitor Breakfast

House Speaker John Boehner suggests that both party conventions (three days) and platforms (60 pages) need to be downsized to make them more accessible to average Americans.

By Dave Cook,?Staff writer / August 27, 2012

House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio speaks at a Monitor-hosted lunch at Roy's Restaurant in Tampa, Fla., on Monday, August 27.

House Speaker John Boehner, chairman of the Republican National?Convention, says both conventions and party platforms would be better?if they were shorter.

Mr. Boehner, the top-ranking Republican in Washington, was dismissive?of the party platform that was completed last week under the direction of?Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, the Republican Party platform chair.

?Have you ever met anybody who has read the party platform? I?ve not?ever met anybody. It ought to be on one sheet of paper. And guess?what? I was on this kick about at least eight or 12 years ago that we?ought to have a one-page party platform, and that way Americans could?actually read it. Might be willing to ? might.?

Appearing relaxed in a sports coat but no tie, Boehner met with?reporters for lunch hosted by the Monitor at a Tampa, Fla.-area restaurant.

The Republican platform was in the news last week?because the group drafting the document met after Missouri Rep. Todd?Akin made controversial comments about rape. The 2012 GOP platform?contains a plank calling for banning abortions without including a?specific exception in the case of rape or incest.

Boehner also joined those who say the actual business done at?conventions is spread over too many days. "These are very expensive?propositions to put on. I think that given as much news as people get?today and the way they get their news, I'm not sure that having a?four-day convention for the future makes a lot of sense.?

The current GOP convention in Tampa was shortened from four days to?three when tropical storm Isaac swept past the waterside city.?Party Chairman Reince Priebus called the convention to order at 2?p.m. Monday and then immediately recessed. The convention will resume?on Tuesday with Isaac threatening to?make landfall near New Orleans.

Boehner opened the gathering with reporters by stressing his?commitment to retaining the Republicans? majority in the House. ?My?goal is [to] gain seats,? he said. ?We?re on offense and I?m going to?keep our team on offense all the way through Election Day.?

When the speaker was asked what could be done to improve the public?s?view of Congress, he offered a spirited defense of his colleagues of?both parties that was laced with humor.

?Congress has been America's favorite whipping boy for 200 years and I?don't think that's going to change anytime soon. And then secondly,?with 435 members and on any given day some of them are out doing?things they probably shouldn't be doing. It's a fact," he said.

But Boehner added, ?I know my colleagues on both sides of the aisle.?And while there may be differences between some Democrats and?Republicans ? 99 percent of my colleagues are decent, honest people?trying to do the right thing for the country. But we work in a setting?that makes it very difficult for people to see that.?

? Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.

This can also help an e-business to access skilled SEO experts who?re familiar with the conventional techniques and current technologies. It can be split into three types:Early Outsourcing: In many instances, companies outsource the original website design and development to launch their website easily, so they can design their website in an internet search engine friendly fashion. The outsourcing team then trains the business?s experts browsing engine optimization methods so they may boost their site later. This is somewhat advanced level approach.Late Outsourcing: Some organizations follow the more traditional method. The business?s experts do the initial design and development work and start the internet site. When this website becomes a well balanced portion of their business, the work of refining website is outsourced and the business?s experts turn their attention and skills towards other places of business. This is called Late outsourcing.Partial Outsourcing: This is also called component outsourcing. In this strategy, the company identifies specific portions of SEO field that are to be applied on their website and assigns these specific jobs to another company that specializes in those functions. Before agreeing to any outsourcing commitment, an e-business should thoroughly evaluate many professional applicants of this field to get solutions to the following questions:What services do they provide? What are their employees abilities, and what part of SEO they handle? Can they provide recommendations and illustrations of their work?Who is responsible for upgrading and maintaining the website? What occurs if changes are not built on regular basis?Who possesses the content of the website? Before outsourcing one should decide which part of SEO Services will be outsourced. Next you need to take into account the budget. The total amount of income is really a critical aspect in this technique. After determining the entire budget, you can employ an organization that will be according to one?s need. So, this was an item of information I desired to provide. I?m sure that by Outsourcing SEO Services one?s business could obtain better relationship in corporate world.
