Mexico - Two years since murder of Juan Francisco Rodr?guez R?os and Andy Mar?a Elvira Hern?ndez Galena

29 June 2012

(WiPC/IFEX) - 28 June 2012 - Two years ago, husband and wife Juan Francisco Rodr?guez R?os (49) and Andy Mar?a Elvira Hern?ndez Galena (36) were shot dead in the internet caf? they owned near their home in Coyuca de Ben?tez, Guerrero state, Mexico.

Both were reportedly shot at close range by two unidentified men who drove up to the caf?. The couple left two children, aged 17 and eight; the younger child witnessed the shooting but was not injured.

Hern?ndez was the editor of the weekly newspaper Semanario La Nueva Linea, while Rodr?guez was the local correspondent for two daily newspapers, El Sol de Acapulco and Diario Objetivo. He was a reporter in the Costa Grande region, north of Acapulco, for 20 years and had covered the region for El Sol de Acapulco for 5 years. Rodr?guez held the Secretary-General position within the local branch of the National Union of Press Reporters (SNRP) in Coyuca de Ben?tez and was a member of the technical committee of the Guerrero state Support Fund for Journalists.

Although the motive for the crime remains unknown to date, a few days before the shooting Rodr?guez took part in an annual convention for Guerrero state journalists in Coyuca de Ben?tez, where concerns about increasing violence against journalists in Mexico were raised.

The Guerrero state prosecutor's office began an investigation on 29 June, the outcome of which is still unclear.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world in which to be a writer or journalist. Since the year 2000, over 80 writers, journalists and bloggers have been murdered and at least another 15 have disappeared. Most of these crimes have not been properly investigated and there have been only a handful of convictions.

The rate at which journalists are being killed has accelerated rapidly: since January 2012, eight print journalists and writers have been murdered in Mexico.

A delegation comprised of PEN International's leadership travelled to Mexico this year to highlight the country's climate of impunity and demanded that the authorities take all necessary steps to end it. For more information, please see: PEN Protesta!

On 12 June 2012, PEN International wrote an open letter to all journalists covering the G20 Summit in Mexico on 18-19 June. We asked them - in the course of their coverage of the event - to raise the issue of the attacks on journalists and writers, and the impunity enjoyed by those who commit these crimes.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Write to the President, Attorney General and Special Prosecutor for Crimes Against Freedom of Expression:
- protesting the continuing attacks on journalists;
- calling for an end to Mexico's climate of impunity in which attacks such as these take place;
- calling on the government to tackle the corruption that pervades Mexican society, and which deters proper investigation of these crimes.

White Rot Fungi Slowed Coal Formation

News | Evolution

The evolution of the ability to break down a plant's protective lignin largely stopped the geologic burial of carbon that formed present-day coal deposits?and may provide secrets to making biofuels from inedible parts of plants

A toughened crosshatch of carbon-based molecules is all that stands between plants and their total destruction at the hands of an array of microbes and fungi. Called lignin, the compound enables redwoods to tower and woody herbs to resist rot. As a result, lignin is the second-most abundant biological compound on the planet?and the bane of would-be biofuel-makers everywhere, blocking their best efforts to make fuels from the inedible parts of plants. It is also the reason for the vast deposits of coal laid down millions of years ago.

Now a new genomic analysis suggests why Earth significantly slowed its coal-making processes roughly 300 million years ago?mushrooms evolved the ability to break down lignin. "These white rot fungi are major decomposers of wood and the only organism that achieves substantial degradation of lignin," explains mycologist David Hibbett of Clark University in Massachusetts, who led the research published in Science on June 29.

By comparing 12 newly sequenced genomes of mushroom fungi with 19 existing genomes, the researchers determined that an ancestral white rot fungi (Agaricomycetes) first evolved the ability to break down lignin. The scientists then used so-called "molecular clock analysis"?a dating technique based on the hypothesis that genes accumulate mutations at a relatively regular rate like trees form rings that record their growth. Such an analysis suggests that an ancestral white rot fungi developed this lignin-degrading ability roughly 290 million years ago, a conclusion backed by comparison with the appearance in the fossil record of three other types of fungi (although the first definitive white rot fossil does not appear until roughly 260 million years ago) and the subsequent expansion and refinement of the arsenal of enzymes employed. The 60-million-year-long Carboniferous period?when the bulk of the world's coal deposits were laid down and atmospheric CO2 levels declined?ended roughly 300 million years ago.

The coincidental timing suggests the appearance of this ability to break down lignin helped slow the massive burial of organic carbon via nondegraded tree trunks and other wood, such as the lignin-rich fernlike plants known as arborescent lycophytes, now extinct. Previous explanations largely argued that such coal formation was a result of the Carboniferous's swampy conditions?after lignin-rich plants fell into these swamps, they simply were buried rather than broken down by fungi or microbes and turned to peat and then coal over geologic time frame. "They're not mutually exclusive," Hibbett notes, although more of the easily overlooked fungal fossils would need to be found to determine the truth.

How exactly white rot breaks down lignin remains unknown. The fungi releases reactive molecules and enzymes that seemingly tear the plant-protecting compound apart via "brute force," in the words of Hibbett. Once the protective lignin is out of the way, the white rot fungi feast on the cellulose, which comprises more digestible plant sugars. And subsequent evolution has given so-called brown rot fungi the means to work around lignin without attacking it directly. "They have evolved a way to get at cellulose and leave the lignin behind," Hibbett says, which results in the crumbly, brown logs littering temperate forests today?potentially coal in the distant future.

Martin Brasier: Is Efficiency Fatal?

Are Golden Ages to be welcomed? Or are they disasters in waiting? Should we yearn for stability? Or relish changes when they come? Could prolonged periods of stability always prove fatal to heirarchies, such as economies and ecosystems? Or should we carry on regardless?

How can ever we hope to find answers here? Historical records barely go back far enough to give us the rules. So might two billion years of fossil record speak out about strange happenings in the past? Or about great dangers that lie ahead? My hunch is that fossils are now speaking out to us loud and clear. And that microscopic fossils have the very darkest stories to tell. The ways of the world can be read within a grain of sand.

The 18th century poet William Blake once teased about seeing 'a world in a grain of sand. He was not alone, of course. Indeed, you may well share some skepticism about such a dream. How could one hope to divine the laws of the universe, or the deeper meaning of life, just by squinting through a glass lens at tiny fossils? One hunch is that Blake was sneering in part at country parsons, who had gleefully followed the example of old Robert Hooke. The latter had the ill luck of working and writing at the time of the Great Plague in London in 1665. And it is with such a scene that my arguments within my new book Secret Chambers begin.

When Hooke sat down to look through his new microscope, what he saw and reported then truly astonished the world. He revealed that a humble flea -- grand vector of bubonic plague -- was truly dressed to kill, provided with armour plates and quills. He then turned aside to make the first ever report of 'cells' within living tissue -- from a wine bottle cork -- estimating some twelve hundred million box-like cells in the microscopic scene before him. But best of all, he dredged miniscule shells from the muds of the River Thames, each no bigger than a grain of sand. His drawings were so carefully rendered that we can even identify the species -- it was a tiny protozoan shell called Ammonia beccarii that now thrives in estuaries across the world, from Port Said to the Potomac. That is fascinating because such tiny shells -- which I have studied all my life -- seem to hold valuable clues to the manner in which complex cells of plants and animals first evolved from bacterial slime. Hooke had stumbled on the clues to life's biggest mystery. Perhaps the most curious and difficult transition in the whole history of evolution -- the formation of the complex modern cell.

All manner of fascinating people have played their part in this great quest, including a spy for the Emperor August who reported the first symbiotic fossils -- akin to Ammonia -- while travelling through war-torn Egypt. Charles Darwin later stumbled on a puzzle in coral polyps while climbing high in the Andes. Then his wife Emma helped to bring clues together during a dinner party in London. We then meet with a precocious Chicagoan girl called Lyn Margulis who wouldn't take 'no' for an answer. She was to revolutionize our thinking, battling for evolution's most beautiful idea... And we bump into a humble Minnesota geologist who kept pestering an esteemed Harvard Professor. Lastly, we meet with an Apollo Missionary who couldn't quite stop talking about the Australian outback.

When woven together, something rather strange emerges from these stories. Over the last 400 million years, we find that reef ecosystems have flirted dangerously with algae, at first cultivating them like house plants, then like arable farmers, and then like symbioholics. But when we inspect the fossil record, we find that every 20-30 million years or so, these complex and highly efficient ecosystems have collapsed completely, taking symbioses down to the bottom again.

But when we travel back in time to between one and two billion years ago, within the interval that I once foolishly dubbed 'the Boring Billion', nothing like this seems to have happened. In fact, we see the reverse. Bacterial guests got so entwined with tprotozoan hosts that they fused into a single, new kind of cell -- the eukaryote cell. Both mitochondria and chloroplasts are vestiges of this great marriage.

Nothing so big has happened in the last 400 million years or so. Symbioses have either stayed rather loose, or they have formed and then dissolved again completely, in the so-called mass extinction events.

My suggestion is that symbioses were able to go much further in the distant past because there were no major collapses of ecosystem. Yes, there were huge meteorite impacts. But nothing quite like the end of the dinosaurs. Just a billion years of networking.

This reveals the alarming nature of our current predicament. In a world like ours, carrying animals locked into complex food chains, symbioses have been obliged to operate within a hierarchical system prone to specialisation, and to boom and bust. So symbiotic associations have been unable to rise again to great heights. Yes, symbioses have explored huge efficiencies, leading to giant, algae-cultivating factories of the kind that now comprise the famous Sphinx. But those symbioses always proved fatal whenever the system flipped to a new state of equilibrium. Which it always did. And maybe always will.

It seems that efficiencies within a system typically prove fatal in the longer term. Redundancy can be a boon. Without slack in the system, any complex structure will always be destined for collapse.

Have we humans seen all this before? Well, yes, I think we have: in the collapse of civilizations around the Mediterranean about 1190 BC. And in the collapse of the Classical world in c. 410 AD. And to a lesser extent, in the collapse of 1929. And in the collapse of our modern banking system too.

Those little fossils are crying out that our bankers have been taking efficiency too far. If so, let this be a warning. Stop such short-term behaviour at once!

A very serious patent situation for Android-based products, and upcoming troubles for Motorola, Nokia, and others.

Apple has won a patent infringement lawsuit that has the ability (and likelihood according to some) of

1) stopping the US import of ANY Android-based product
2) causing almost immediate loss of effective support for ANY Android-based product

Apple secures injunction against Samsung Galaxy Tab in ENTIRE European Union (except Netherlands)

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/apple-secures-injunction-against...ag=nl.e539

20110809

Summary: Samsung has suffered what is arguably its worst setback yet in its international battle with Apple over the Galaxy Tab.
Apple has scored a major victory as a German court has granted a preliminary injunction against the distribution of Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 10.1 throughout the entire European Union, with the exception of The Netherlands...
With Europe out of the game, at least for the near future, it?s going to have a lot trouble making any kind of profit off this device--if that ever even happens...
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company recently garnered another win against Samsung in Australia, where the Android-based tablet is being temporarily blocked from promotion and sale....

? >>?Re: Apple May Blow Android Tech Out of Market-Patent Block

The article talks about how "generic" the Apple design was, and seems to suggest this should somehow prevent Apple from having an "unfair" patent that can limit others from using this "generic" design.

What the writer may not understand is that it is the GOAL of every patent writer/inventor to make their patent as "generic" as possible, as broad as possible, to cover the largest possible population of future inventions/devices in the real world.

If my patent is approved, that makes it so future inventors MUST come to me to get permission and a license to build their device (technically EVEN for personal use). So, I have the power of life and death over their product, and I can demand a piece of their pie...or shut them down. I am under NO obligation to let them build or sell their product, and the public have no right to demand that I do so. The government may do so, but only under certain conditions...in the past, in some cases, even WAR has been ruled an insufficient legal reason to make an inventor give-away a license to produce anything that uses part or all of his/her patent (e.g. a new machine-gun design).

For example, instead of inventing a two-wheeled bicycyle, I would patent a design that describes a "mass-moving unit" (MMU) with ANY number of wheels, type of wheels, and maybe even any type of "ground-to-MMU friction-reducing ability". It's just that ONE specific implementation could be 2 wheels and a metal frame in one case, but it could apply just as well to an anti-gravity field that someone hasn't even invented yet. It would also apply to carts, cars, hovercraft, jet-packs, airplanes, etc....If written properly and broadly enough, a really successful patent would legally cover literally anything that uses any mechanism to reduce friction between the ground and the "mass-moving unit".

Apple's patent could prevent all OEMs from building tablets
"....But if Apple can get an injunction against the Galaxy Tab, what?s to stop it getting similar injunctions against other Android tablets from other maker? Heck, what?s to stop it going after Windows 8 tablets once they are available?...."

Wtf! I bet Apple will soon win a patent over "a rectangle shaped device that uses electricity". Seriously this system is flawed as hell, I'd like to see how this patent will start to affect phone sales.

There you go being just too dog-gone specific again, Meats. Back to patent class for you. ;)

Don't limit it to "uses electricity". Write the patent with "manipulates string quanta" instead.

Otherwise all someone has to do to get around your silly patent is to invent an "ellipsoidal"(1) device that uses gravity, or anti-protons, dilithium crystals...hell, maybe even ZPMs or Chriss Angel.

(1)The "ellipsoidal" shape can even look very much like a "rectangle shaped device" by simply being "smooshed" appropriately in the axes to the point where it is just short of actually being one. Think of a smooth elongated, somewhat wide, and thin "skipping" stone (with truncated ends) from a river. It's an ellipsoid...and technically not a cuboid (derived from a rectangle).

I feel that there are several worrying implications that may develop from this, and some that are already developing.

In the first instance, the European block on Samsung?s products has been deliberately heard in the German court that has, historically, generally found in favour of the plaintiff in patent cases. Apple are clearly aware of this, and have targeted them specifically. A ruling in an EU member state in this manner automatically covers all EU member states; again, Apple is clearly aware of this.

The second thing that concerns me is, what appears to be some sort of backroom deal that Apple could be doing with members of the judiciary, in the USA as well as Europe, because I can see that some manipulation is clearly being brought to bear here. The reason I think this is because of the manner in which both the EU and USA rulings against Samsung have come about.

In the USA case, what basically happened is: one party made a complaint against a second party, and the second party were censured because of this, however, they were not allowed to see the evidence against them. Apple said the GT10.1 was a bit too much like the new iPad, and Samsung were ordered to hand over a GT10.1 for Apple to examine, but when Samsung asked for an iPad to compare to the GT, they were told ?No?.

In the EU case, what happened is: one party made a complaint against a second party, and the second party were censured because of this without even being given a chance to respond to the allegations.

Now, as far as I?m aware, the fundamental constitutions of both the EU and the USA give people the right to due process, and I believe this may have been bent, or even broken in these cases, and it?s my feeling that this is setting a dangerous precedent.

Now, I think what Apple?s trying to do here is not stop Samsung producing their direct competition to Apple?s flagship product, but simply to delay things for a year or so in the court system, which will effectively render the Samsung product obsolete; I?m sure we all know how long a year is in the world of technology. It also strikes me that the reason Apple has gone into the EU case with such zeal is, having seen the GT10.1 (following the case in the USA) they?ve realised just how strong a competitor it?s going to be in the tablet market, and they?re outright scared.

I don?t think we?re going to see just how much of a messy fight this is going to be until Google themselves get involved. I think they are Apple?s real target in all this.

I would have titled this,

Has Google cut it's Android's throat?
It should be noted that violating the Linux GPL "...will automatically terminate your rights under this License."

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/have-many-android-vendors-l...inux/14210

Have many Android vendors lost their rights to distribute Linux?

Does section 4 of the GPL version 2 mean that many (if not all) Android vendors have already lost their rights to distribute Linux?

According to an IP litigator, the answer is yes.

...by refusing to make freely available the GPL?d portions of Honeycomb, Google is forcing its OEM partners into a situation of non-compliance with the GPL.

Naughton believes that this puts OEMs, and even Google itself, in a really bad position

Evidence is now coming to light as to Apple?s (possibly underhand) tactics in the German case, along the lines of what my earlier intimations suggested:

First off, they altered the image to make the new Tab10.1 look more like an iPad:

Dutch website Webwereld has compared the some of the images from the court documents? ?to reality and found some disturbing differences. In Apple's images, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been shown with a different aspect ratio (1:36 as opposed to the actual 1:46 -- the iPad is 1:30), causing it to more closely resemble the dimensions of the iPad.

Additionally:

?the Samsung logo has been removed from Apple's image

And, the unit pictured was:

?shown with the app drawer open instead of the normal home screen view

So much for, ?The evidence I shall give will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

Capital! :))

The injunction preventing sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been suspended across Europe except for in Germany where the slate is still prohibited from sale.

However, curiously...

There's no indication yet if the allegedly inaccurate images of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that were submitted as evidence by Apple had any bearing on the suspension of the injunction.

I think patent laws are illegal, the only way a patent law should be enforced is if it can be proven that the infringement was intentional and the new creation was based on the patented device.

Google has sold a number of patents to HTC so that the mobile-manufacturer can sue Apple.

The nine patents, which Google itself bought from Motorola, Palm and other companies less than a year ago, concern Google?s Android operating system. In a sign both that Google is unwilling to sue Apple directly and also that the ?patent wars? between major manufacturers are further hotting up, HTC has now filed claims against Apple, while also itself being sued by the iPhone maker.

Autoresponders Generate Online Profits ? SMB Advice & Tips

by: Lewis Leake

If you ask online marketer how to convert website visitors into buyers,

most will give you the same answer: the sales are in the follow-up.

It?s much more than just increasing your traffic volume. After all, most

of your visitors won?t decide to purchase your products or your services

when they first visit your website. But that?s not to say that they won?t

be interested in your offer tomorrow or next week, or that they won?t be

interested in future offers.

Therefore, it is necessary to get your visitor?s email addresses so that

you can inform them of current and upcoming offers. You do this by using

an opt-in system that invites them to subscribe to your mailing list. By

gathering their names and email addresses, with their permission of

course, you are now able to contact them periodically with information,

usually by sending them an ezine as well as an occasional freebie.

There are no problems as long as you?re only dealing with ten or twenty

subscribers, as you could just email them individually. However, such

numbers aren?t going to make you many sales. You should aim for a mailing

list that could reach into the thousands. That number of subscribers

would make it difficult for you to prepare individual emails for each

name on your list.

The basis of an ideal mailing list, therefore, is an effective

autoresponder system that provides the power and flexibility to email

your subscribers in a timely and efficient manner.

A mailing list of considerable size powered by a good autoresponder

system consistently provides earnings for many Internet marketers. A lot

of online businessmen make significant profits from their mailing lists

alone.

Okay, but what is an autoresponder system? An autoresponder system is

like a digital secretary. It takes care of your subscribers by providing

an opt-in system that allows visitors to subscribe to your mailing list.

An autoresponder system also takes care of the sending of emails to your

subscriber base.

You can prepare your messages in advance, program them into the

autoresponder, and preset the intervals by which the messages are

delivered. You can even separate your subscribers into various groups.

You could have a group for those who have not yet placed an order, for

example. You could have another grouping for those who have already made

a purchase. This allows you to use two different marketing approaches in

dealing with each of the groups.

A good autoresponder system can help you build trust in your products or

services. With a good autoresponder, you can also provide an efficient

technical support program. If your subscribers email you a question about

one of your products, for example, you could preset the autoresponder to

reply with a general FAQ to send them the information.

Not all autoresponders are designed the same and much care should be

taken in choosing the right one for your particular needs. Here are some

questions you should ask before you decide on a particular autoresponder

service:

* How many accounts can you create? Some business plans might

require that you have different accounts for different products.

* How many lists can you build? There are also some business plans where

you might need different lists for different groups of subscribers.

* How many follow-up messages can you preset? Do you need a lot of

follow-up messages or do you know yet? Quite a few autoresponder services

provide for unllimited follow-ups.

* How many subscribers can the system hold? And also, how many

subscribers can the system respond to?

* How much customization is allowed? You need to be able to personalize

your email messages with each subscriber?s name and other customizable

information.

* How does the system gather subscriber information? The process should

be simple and convenient; otherwise, the visitor will not subscribe.

* Will you be able to send your messages in html and text formats? Most

autoresponder services allow both formats.

* Will you be able to track your subscribers for the purpose of target

marketing? This my or may not be important to you.

* Is the scheduling system fully automated and flexible enough for your

current and future needs?

* Is the autoresponder easy to use? Do they have a demo area so that you

can try it out?

Now, does the autoresponder service you are considering provide answers

to all of the above questions? If so and if it is offered at a reasonable

price, then you should grab the deal as soon as you can.

Remember, if you?re running an online business, a good autoresponder

should be one of your primary investments. It could be the key to an

excellent conversion rate, more sales and more profits.

Let the fact that you?ll be indulging on Saturday spur you to kick butt at the gym and make the most of every workout all week long.? The process here is both physical and mental.? By working extra hard all week to make room for this Saturday?s fiesta, you?ll physically be in prime fat burning mode by the time the party rolls around.? Mentally, you?ll be able to let go of any guilt you may normally have (see Tip #1 above as a reminder about the importance of balance).? After all, you?ve worked hard all week and you?ve planned to relax and indulge a bit with your friends and family.? It?s a win, win situation!

3.? Believe it or not, it?s a bad idea to deprive yourself all day Saturday to save ?room? and ?calories? for the big event.? If you walk into a BBQ with every type of food imaginable at your fingertips and you haven?t eaten all day, you are heading for disaster!? Always eat balanced meals one hour within waking and every 3 hours before a cookout.? This way your mind is in control of your food choices, not your empty stomach!? It?s a smart idea to also eat one hour before the event.? Try snacking on a protein bar before the party to help keep blood sugar stable and allow you to make conscious food choices when you arrive.

4.? It doesn?t hurt to bring along some healthy and delicious choices, or at least know how to identify them at a cookout.?? Do your best to build a balanced plate with some protein and carbohydrates and keep in mind that most dishes offered at a BBQ will have more than enough fat (way more actually!).? ?Whether you are hosting the event or attending, the following list makes for delectable (and healthy) party food that everyone will enjoy.

-Try Marinated or BBQ grilled chicken breasts, shrimp, pork tenderloin, salmon steaks or filet mignon (the leanest red meat) on the grill.? Meat, poultry or seafood and vegetable kabobs are also healthy and a fun change of pace.

-Instead of regular hamburgers, try using 97% lean ground beef.?? Serve with all the regular toppings and whole wheat buns.

-Chop a mixture of your favorite vegetables in large chunks (corn, tomato, zucchini, red onion, bell peppers) or try whole asparagus with the bottom of the stalk cut off.? Toss in a bowl with quality extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper.? Grill until slightly charred to really bring out the flavors.

-Instead of plain old pasta salad with a few veggies tossed in for good measure, go in the opposite direction.? Use your favorite pasta salad recipe only make a few adjustments.? Triple the vegetable content (and vary it up- grape tomatoes, fresh bell pepper, onion, cucumber, banana peppers, etc.) and use the pasta as the filler, not the main event.? Use a reduced fat version of your favorite dressing such as low fat Italian dressing in place of regular.? If using a mayo based dressing, try cutting the amount of mayo in half and replacing the rest with plain, low fat yogurt- it will add a little tang and a lot of flavor.?? Lastly fresh herbs like parsley or basil really make a dish stand out from the crowd.

-Try whipping up a low fat dip like hummus or mango salsa (combine chopped mango, red onion, a small amount of minced garlic and jalapeno with a splash of lime juice and good olive oil.? Toss with fresh cilantro and season to taste with salt and pepper).? Serve with home -made baked whole wheat pita chips.? (Hint- Mango salsa also works beautifully on grilled meat, poultry and seafood.)

-Fresh fruit platters are always well received and a perfectly sweet way to complete a meal.??? Try serving a variety of fruit with a home-made dip of Plain Yogurt, vanilla extract, honey and lemon zest or try our Pina Colada Dip found in your Recipe Collection inside your software!

6.?? Stay hydrated with plenty of water to beat bloat, fatigue and headaches. ??If you?re the host, try serving homemade lemonade with ice water, freshly squeezed lemon and lemon slices sweetened with Stevia or Truvia.

7. ?Get creative with your alcohol. I like Skinny Girl Margarita in a glass with a ton of flavored seltzer water which adds fizz and extra fluid to make the drink last. Light beer or wine is also a good choice. The rule of thumb with alcohol is, use the drink to replace the starchy carb in the meal.? So basically you would have your protein and fat with some light carbohydrates like grilled veggies or salad plus a drink or two.? If you must splurge on both carbs and alcohol, go for a lighter drink like the ones described above and keep it to a 2 drink maximum if possible.

8. Do something active!? At my house we play ?bags? (also known as Cornhole to all of you in the South) or go swimming with my nephews.? The point is, if you keep mingling and keep moving, your less likely to hover at the dessert table and this means less mindless munching!

9. And my last tip?? I find that after a day cookout, I?m exhausted by 5 or 6 pm, which is frustrating because clearly it?s much too late for a nap and I?m pretty sure I can?t get away with going to sleep at that time!? So I take a power walk outside after the cookout. ?It helps me to burn off some of the treats from the cookout but most importantly, it rejuvenates me enough to stay awake until bedtime.

Remember, the summer is all about having fun, enjoying the weather and family and friends and relaxing!? The great thing is, you can absolutely do all of that while sticking to your goals with the tips above.? Cheers to an amazing summer!

My best,
