The Lesson from Lauryn Hill and her tax evasion charge | Gerard ...

Lauryn Hill's Mugshot released

I feel bad for Lauryn Hill, somewhat. Her and The Fugees have sold millions of records from practically only one record, The Fugees. This one record sold over 10,000,000 records. Yes, that?s all good and an artists? dream. I?ve been in and around the music industry and entertainment industry since 1992 and have provided the same advice since this time. Most artists advances and payments come minus tax taken out depending upon how they set themselves up with the record label to receive the income.

Every entertainer is looking to sustain their lives off their art just as we all are. I am one of them too. If you get lucky enough to turn the corner and start making money, please, I beg of you, get a good accountant who understands royalty payments and has royalty tracking software. On top of this, you need a money manager and not all of them are bad, at all. I?m talking good money managers at AXA Advisors just like mine in Atlanta, Jan Williams. Let these people handle and track your money and provide you with a monthly report. When you get the monthly cash flow report, actually take a day off to review it thoroughly and make sure your money is being sent to the IRS and to the accounts that you designate.

We need to move past getting arrested on some crazy charge like tax evasion when it could easily be avoided. We have to learn to trust the right people and seek the right guidance just like the bible states. Seek proper guidance and it will save your life. I can?t even imagine Lauryn Hill in jail and leaving her kids behind for even one year. I hope this does not happen and I hope she has cash stashed somewhere to pay the IRS. If not, we will have to start a KickStarter campaign to help her get out of this mess.
