Biotechnology report emphasize on agriculture productivity ...

Almost 80 per cent of Tanzanians live in rural areas and many of them were poor.

Arusha ? Biotechnology innovations, including recombinant DNA technology are potentially powerful tools for improving agricultural production and productivity.

The information was revealed in a report titled ?Initiating Agricultural Biotechnology in Tanzania.? It was issued by Tanzania Pesticides Research Institute (TPRI) based in the City of Arusha. The report states that biotechnology will also address food quality, human health, industrial development, natural resource utilization,? conservation and environmental protection.

?The? diversity of available techniques alone is sufficient to cater for sustainable development needs of the resource for poor-farming communities of Tanzania where hunger, poverty, malnutrition are chronic problems,? says the report. For a country like Tanzania, predominantly agricultural, with 90 per cent of the population being directly or indirectly involved in agriculture or related activities for their livelihoods, biotechnology could have a dramatic effect on the economy through the use of advanced tools, such as genetic engineering, the report says.

It added that: ?The possibility to utilize biotechnology to develop new products for entirely new uses, for example, would promote development of new related industries and create more employment opportunities. However, according to the report, attempts to harness the application of biotechnology means more responsibilities to ensure that the technology is applied effectively. Those responsibilities include, among others, deciding how technology is embraced in the national research agenda, setting policies, determining the benefits and risks of biotechnology application.

Others are ensuring productivity constraints of the poor are addressed and are developing the necessary regulatory capacity. The report cautions that the process of biotechnology research and development itself is very costly in terms of human and financial resources. Thus, in many developing countries, including Tanzania, scientists lack the opportunity to utilize the huge potential offered by biotechnology due to lack of funds and facilities.
